Mile High Excursion

Today we decided to check out the Mile High Flea Market.

When I go to flea markets I always hope to find fun little treasures amidst old junk.  There was not much of this at this flea market.  It was pretty much just – well – new junk.  There were a few sections where people had brought in some old/used stuff, but I didn’t find anything.

That was ok though.  It was beautiful out, and we enjoyed walking around.

Plus there was fresh kettle corn.  That alone may have made the trip worth it.

And even better?  A couple of carnival rides that were just Davey’s size.

He loved it!

The first time he rode the second ride, he “chauffeured”  a little bitty boy.  Davey checked on him pretty frequently to make sure all was well.

I like his expression here.

Lunch at El Jardin.  Very good Mexican Restaurant.  Now home.  I went to the library to replenish Davey’s books.  Davey and David are “rassling” at the moment.

Unpacking? Nah!

Today we made a little progress on “Project Move into House”.  We went to buy a washer and dryer, oh and a floor lamp.  And then we decided to call it a day.

My parents are here, so we figured the unpacking could wait abit, and we decided to go check out Boulder.

Boulder is cool.  We picked up lunch first at “Mustard’s Last Stand”.   Perfect name for a hot dog place!

We didn’t know it, but there’s a farmer’s market every Saturday.  It was fun to stroll through it.  Biggest farmer’s market I’ve ever seen.  The farmer’s market was near a large park.  There were people and their dogs everywhere.  Pretty fun to walk around.

Davey played on a slide, ran around, explored and became king of the large rock.

It was warm today.  Apparently 85 degrees from what we heard on the news.  (and to think tomorrow it is supposed to snow again!)

Anyway, we were enjoying the river.

I decided to walk Davey down to the edge so he could throw rocks.  As we made our way down the little embankment, I saw this:

I know.  I got a little carried away with the arrows, but it seems that everywhere I go, I meet a snake.  It’s starting to help me work through my snake phobia, I suppose, but I’d just rather not see them.  First, I raked them up several times in our backyard in Arkadelphia.  Then I thought – “ahhhh, moving to Colorado.  That’s the end of that!”

Nope.  Lots of rattlers around.  I almost stepped on one not too long after we moved here.  Then today?  Yeah, I think it’s a harmless water snake, but ugh ugh ugh.

ugh.

So I asked David to take over.

Such a pretty day despite the snake encounter!  We visited the library, a cool Boulder yarn shop, and then came back home, where I did unpack a few things.  Knitting related things mostly!

Casa Bonita

When David and I were in high school, we loved to go eat at Casa Bonita in Tulsa.  That was just a fine time.  We’d wait in line to get our “all you can eat Deluxe specials”.  This was in my early Mexican food eating days, so I thought it was great food.  My favorite part was always the sopapillas.

So now there are apparently two remaining Casa Bonitas.  I think the one in Tulsa is still open, and then there’s the one in Denver.

Last night we visited the Denver Casa Bonita. David’s brother Rob and his wife Angie are visiting Denver this week, so we all thought this would be a fun place to go.  It was.  Davey loved it.

The line was just like old times.  Davey waited patiently and not patiently.  It varied.  Here is David holding him for awhile.

Eventually we got to our trays.

As we were guided to our seat, we saw an “ape” running by.  Apparently a man with a net chases him.

After we were seated, we were able to watch the “cliff divers”! and the mariachi band.

Davey took it all in.

Casa Bonita and the “flag”.  We always just loved the idea of raising that flag.  I don’t know why the flag was (is) so fascinating to us, but we’d raise the flag and here came our waiter to help us out.

And then came the lady with the lighted swords.  One look at Davey’s face, and we knew we could not resist his becoming a proud owner of the sword.

Davey did eat pretty well, once he was done building his “lettuce pasta” (he had a great time stacking the orange slices and lettuce leaves).

We played a few games and collected some tickets which were redeemed for a plastic something or other.    Davey liked skeeball.  He gets a lot of bang for the buck when he plays, as they always roll back to him several times.  He finally came up with a brilliant idea.  Why not dispense with rolling them and instead just give them a nice hard throw.  David and I finished the balls up pretty quickly after that.

As we got ready to leave, I wanted to take a picture of Davey with his Uncle Rob and Aunt Angie.  Davey really didn’t want any part of it.  I asked them to move in quick.  I did what I could to get Davey in there.

ahhhh.  Casa Bonita.

Davey and Mommy go for a walk.

Yesterday morning was such a warm and pretty day that Davey and I decided to go on a walking picture taking journey.

Every journey should begin with a homemade chocolate chip cookie snack.

“Mommy take a picture of that tree!”  So I did.  Not a terrific composition.

“Mommy!  A rock wall!  Can I climb on it?”  He climbed all over it.

And walked back and forth across it.

Upon finding a pinecone –

One must kick it.

At which point  Mommy started yelling, “away from the street, away from the street”, although he really had no plans to run into the street.  I was afraid it might be tempting to kick that pine cone  again.

We walked to a little natural foods store by our apartment.  We love this little store.  We wandered around a little.  Davey saw this soap.  “Mommy, what is this? Take a picture of it!”  So I did.

We decided to stop for lunch.  The boy is starting to develop a little bit of an attitude regarding the omnipresent camera.  Yeah, I can understand why.

But mostly he tolerates it and says, “Can I see the picture?”

On our way home we walked through a bed of volcanic black lava!

He found another pine cone and decided he needed to take this one home.

And of course a stick.

And we returned home.  I am glad I can blog about and remember a day like this.

Tiny Tots: Inside the Orchestra

We did the neatest thing with Davey yesterday that I want to blog about and remember.   The Junior Symphony Guild in Denver puts together concerts for children, where the orchestra sits in a large circle, and the kids and parents sit in the center of the circle.  It was incredible.

Davey liked watching all the kids.  There were many groups of young children from pre-ks and kindergartens.  He thought they were pretty interesting to watch.  Here we were waiting for the concert to begin.

The conductor, “Maestro Jensen” made it so fun for the kids.  He was so energetic and engaging. Some of the music was recognizable to the kids. (“Star Wars” and we rode along to “The Lone Ranger”.)  The kids participated during some of the songs.  For example, the orchestra played “Thus Sprach Zarathustra” by Strauss although most people associate it with 2001: A Space Odyssey.  (Not David – he associates it with the Elvis concert introduction.  I do too actually.)   The kids (and there were probably a couple hundred) all curled up into little balls, and as that music built, they all stretched and stood up and GREW!  Here’s Davey growing as tall as he can!

He was so excited throughout.   An opera singer walked amongst the kids and sang “Figaro”.  A 9 year old incredibly talented little girl played part of a concerto.  During some of the music, the musicians would walk amongst the kids so they could get close up looks at them playing their clarinet, bassoon and bass.

Davey’s expressions tell it all.   Here the concert is beginning, and Davey is stretching tall to see what’s going on up front.

The brass section was behind us.  David heard them playing something here.  See the “face shove”.  It’s the “Daddy look.  Daddy look now!” maneuver.

We’re clapping here, and Davey is just having a good old time.

One of our favorites was “In the Hall of the Mountain King”.  (had to share a link.) Davey loves this and had learned it from “Little Einsteins”.

David and I had as much fun as little Davey did.  Davey’s expression here tells it all for us.

Saturday Excursion: Snow Sculptures!

Yesterday we made a trek to Breckenridge.  We are all still battling these colds, but we thought it might be nice to get out.  An easy drive to Breckenridge, stroll around and look at the snow sculptures, and a nice scenic drive back.

It didn’t quite go that way.  It was a fun trip, but it was more demanding than we anticipated.

First of all, we quickly realized that there are a lot of skiers headed to the mountains on a Saturday morning.  It was bumper to bumper at times along I-70.  We learned not to drive to Breckenridge on Saturday during ski season.

Then it was bumper to bumper people once we reached Breckenridge.  We didn’t think we were going to find a parking space, but at the last moment, when we’d almost given up, we found a great spot not far from the sculptures.

The sculptures were really amazing.  These photos don’t do them justice.

Medusa!

This sculpture was cool, but I wish we’d gotten a good picture of the one directly behind it.  There were all these wraith looking things holding up torches.  Some of the detail was just amazing.

Davey enjoyed looking around.  There were a ton of people.  I think it’s overwhelming to be a little guy amongst so many people.  I am not crazy about it myself.

The sculptures started out as big blocks of “Stomped” down snow.  There was one that we could walk up and touch.  Davey liked that.

He liked a chance to play in the snow too.

During our drive, we saw people ice fishing on a couple of lakes.  That’s still just amazing to us, the idea that the frozen lake can support all those trucks and cars parked out on it.  Then on our way home, we saw people parasailing too, but they were on snowboards.  I’d never seen anything like it.  They really got moving.

If you look carefully,  you can see a tiny figure being propelled by a tiny sail.  (I took this from the car. Not a great shot.)

At the end of the day, apparently many of the skiers return to Denver.  So we had heavy traffic for a good portion of the drive home as well.  Davey remained cheerful though.  He drank his lemonade, ate M&Ms, and kept us entertained with knock knock jokes!

Saturday Exploration

We went on a Saturday drive today.  We drove out to Conifer and Evergreen and then back to Golden.  Golden’s just about our favorite.  Conifer and Evergreen are beautiful, but I don’t want to live in either place.  I can’t see Kansas when I am in Conifer or Evergreen, and I love seeing mountains to the west and big wide open space to the east.  We’d like to live in Golden or in western Lakewood.   So anyway, we were in Golden a couple of months ago when Clear Creek looked like this. (We were there with my parents.)

Here is what it looked like today.

So frozeny.  Being from the southern regions of the country, we are not used to this.

Then I looked up the river just abit, and I saw this. (I was wishing for a better zoom.)

What a neat backdrop for their wedding pictures.  It wasn’t that cold today – low 50s, but I bet she was chilly in that dress!

There’s a neat slide for Davey right by the creek too.  Davey quickly made a friend.  He worked so hard to follow her.

She took a liking to him though, and then it was this:

She insisted on helping him up the steps.  I heard him saying, “But I can do this all by myself!”

They came down the slide together numerous times.

But finally, she had to leave.  And then we had to leave.  And there were tears of anguish.

These tears lasted about 5 seconds.  At that point, David took off running, and Davey tore up the stairs as fast as he could go to chase him across the field.

And then there were hugs.

And ice cream.  Our stop in Golden had begun with ice cream.  Davey had birthday cake ice cream with added sprinkles.  He thought that was just pretty great.

Oklahoma Christmas

It’s been a great few days.  Davey has had a grand time.  He’s played with family and friends.  It’s been a non-stop celebration.

Tonight we had a mini-reunion of friends from our small Oklahoma town.  Davey played with the children of our childhood friends.  After we got home, it was bedtime, and I think Davey was asleep in under 5 minutes.  He was happy tired.

Tomorrow we will spend time with family and more friends, and then we will have to begin to make our way home.

I took lots of pictures of both families, but I’ll spare most of them “blog exposure”.   You’ll have to take my word that they are beautiful families.

Here is one representative sample:  (Davey with his Opa.)

And I can’t resist sharing a picture of Davey in his new little dragon hat.  He loved it.  It has little claw mittens too.  I know I am a biased Mama, but it was just so darn cute.

Oh knitting!  I have started THE SWEATER.  I have approximately two inches of ribbing done and have started on the stockinette.  It is almost time for my first fair isle section.  I am kind of winging it on the back – as far as the placement of the colorwork.  We shall see how it goes.  My David deadline is fast approaching.  I do have that I-70 drive back to Denver coming up, so who knows how much I could accomplish!  (Although I think we all know that the deadline is going to come and go.  I anticipate requesting several extensions.  I probably should start hoping for a record cold summer, so that he will be able to wear it when I finish it.)
