Champ Camp

Yesterday Davey started a 6 week camp.  They’ll meet weekly and learn the basics of three different sports: soccer, tball/baseball, and basketball.  (I’m thinking the basketball portion of the camp is going to be a hoot.)

Twenty 3 and 4 year olds participated in this camp.  There was a coach for every 3-4 kids.  It was the greatest thing.  There is nothing like seeing twenty 3 and 4 year olds all in a big group.  It’s like puppy joy.

They stretched.

They lined up in their groups, and they held hands as they walked to the area where they were going to practice.

I love watching them walk in their little groups.

He loved kicking the ball.

Oh and look at his focus!

Every once in awhile they’d all just fall down giggling.

At the end of camp, they all got in a big circle again.  Then the coach would throw the ball toward one of the kids and they were supposed to kick it.

This was fun, but then the ball got away, and that was even more fun.  I wish I’d taken a better picture of the circle of kids disappearing as 20  kids went running after that ball.

After we were finished, I wanted to take a picture for David.

“Davey, smile!  I want to take a picture for Daddy!”

Thank goodness that reverse psychology still works on him sometimes.

“Davey.  That’s great!  Daddy will love to see the back of your head!”

Immediate spinning child and this:

(And yes, his name is spelled wrong.  The poor girl was being swarmed by 20 kids needing name tags, and I didn’t have the heart to ask her for another.)

“Great Scott!”

Yesterday, Davey decided that we all needed new names.  He told David that he was Sasquatch.  I was known as Electra, and Davey was Incredible Hulk.  Davey called us Sasquatch and Electra for most of the day.

“Mo — Electra, are you…?”

“I love you Sasquatch.”

It was pretty fun.

Today David and Davey strolled over to what they call the “fancy” playground while I was at school.  David ran while pushing the stroller on the way back, so they played superhero games which involved everything along the path being some type of monster.

“Davey!  There’s a rabbit monster!”

The rabbit monster hopped away.

Davey said, “Great Scott!  He deflected my heat beam!”

Davey and Lulu

Yesterday Davey went to a birthday party. His friend Lulu had turned 4.

There was a bounce castle, where he spent a good part of the afternoon.

There was a piñata.

Cupcakes!

He enjoyed watching Lulu open some of her presents.  He was very excited for her to open the gift that he had gotten her.

He tried out the slip and slide, but it was just a little too chilly for him.

But what he enjoyed the mostest was playing with his friend Lulu.

At one point, Lulu announced that Davey had kissed her and that he was now her boyfriend.  (If you are wondering, as I was, there was apparently a carefully placed kiss on Lulu’s forehead.)

Hodge Podge

Yesterday I learned to do a circular cast on –  The Emily Ocker Cast on to be more specific.  It involved a crochet hook.  I figured it out by watching a couple of videos and then referring to the photos from the link above.   Apparently I needed several types of demonstrations in order to learn this.  It was tricky at first, and then when I got it – I got it!  I love that feeling, and after that, it was easy as pie.  I am starting a circular shawl.  Girasole by Jared Flood to be specific.  So far so fun!

Let’s see what else.  Davey continues to remind us at least once daily that “Davey is a little boy name, and when he gets big he wants to be called ‘Thor'”.  I suggested David.  Nope.

Today we were walking on a sidewalk toward a building, and Davey said, “I smell elephants”.  Apparently, someone had just put some fertilizer down.

I don’t know why he continues to ask me superhero questions.  I either get it wrong, or I get it wrong.  And the rest of the time, I just don’t know.  And even when I do know, I still get it wrong.  “Mommy.  Can Captain America fly?”  I say yes.  “No Mommy!”

“Is Boomerang a good guy?” 50 -50 shot here for me.  “Yes”, I say.  “No Mommy!”  (And I am not sure as I write this which he is.  I am no good on 50 50 odds, and I tend to forget quickly.)

It doesn’t matter if Davey already knows the answer.  He still wants to ask the question.  So I try to answer incorrectly to play with him.  I still manage to mess that up half the time.

It’s all very confusing.

I am working on the superheroes and supervillains working together.  I encourage them to hug and stuff.  I also encouraged Davey to learn all their super abilities and such so that later when he gets older, then they can do battle.  That works a little.  The bad guys are not bad.  They are just silly!  At least, I keep trying to tell him that.  He still wants to make them battle, although I think they all went camping today.  Apparently, Dr Doom was nice when he went camping.

So that’s our lives of superheroes and more superheroes.

David got a Roger Federer hat today.  A friend  brought it back from Switzerland.  It may be one of David’s favorite things he has ever received in his entire life.  He was very excited.  I need to take a picture of it perched on his head.

The other night I made this: Cindy’s Jambalaya.  I have made it several times.  I highly recommend it.  I used turkey smoked sausage, and I thought it worked great.

Tonight we are making homemade pizza.  Davey is getting ready to help me.  Better get to it!

Chalk? Dinosaur Dig!

Saturday we went to the Denver Chalk Art Festival.  When I think of chalk being used outdoors, I think of sidewalk chalk.  I think of the chalk that I have watched my nieces and Davey using.

I didn’t expect results such as these:

I wish I could have seen the wolf on Sunday after the piece was completed.

This one went on to win first place I think.

These artists were using pastels – I guess technically a type of chalk?  They were using jillions of colors and  they were beautiful.  And to think how temporary these pieces are.

There were many many artists, and David and I enjoyed looking at all of their work.

What about Davey?  Well, the art was ok, but he enjoyed his “dinosaur dig”.

We had forgotten our sunscreen and soon found that we were going to cook without it, so Davey and I waited at this sidewalk construction area, while David ran back to get the sunscreen.

Davey was determined to find David a t-rex bone.

“Mommy, T-Rex bones are Daddy’s favorite!”

He found a nice rock which he identified as a t-rex bone.

Gravel and rocks and the potential for a paleontological find.  That’s what it is all about!

Blocking with Davey and the Hulk

I blocked my Wendy Johnson Mystery Shawlette this morning.   Yesterday I’d bought blocking wires, and what a world of difference that made.  It was so much easier than when I attempted to block my Seaside Shawlette with pins only.

I also had my blocking squares which made it that much easier.

Davey helped me of course.  He was measuring things with the yardstick.  Then Hulk got involved as well.

Then Davey and Hulk had a pillow fight.

Then Davey decided to play some Elefun.

Now the shawl is drying.  It was a wonderful pattern.  I did not have to have a cone of silence around me.  I could even watch some tv while I was knitting it.

I love lace.  I can’t wait to knit more.  I need to get back to my Joy of Sox and I will, but I am kind of hooked on lace.

I never thought I would say that!

So now I am about done writing.  Davey and I are singing “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash.  He loves that song.

Water Park Time Again and Mowing

Davey and I made our first trip to the water park today.  Davey was anxious to go back having had so much fun almost daily last summer at the Arkadelphia waterpark.

It’s a great waterpark.  Lots of space to spread out and have a picnic, and they have some nice areas for small children.  But there is a difference here, and it’s about the water temperature.  The water at the Arkadelphia park was more on the hot tub side.  The water at the Broomfield park is more like an icy Rocky Mountain stream.  It’s still early in the season though.  Maybe it will warm up abit.  It gets pretty cool here at night though, so then that drops the water temperature again.

It was 90 degrees today but the wind was blowing really hard.  It picked up speed after we’d been there a couple of hours and Davey was shivering.  For us, it was time to head home, but many of the kids would play play play and then go huddle up in a towel.

Until the wind really picked up though, it was really nice.  Davey had a great time playing around in a shallow kids’ pool.  We’ll definitely spend some more time there this summer.

Then this afternoon, Davey helped David mow for the first time.  He thought it was great fun.

Little does he know that David is passing on mowing duties.

Ok.  Maybe not quite yet.

Mystery Knit-a-long and Don’t you Smile!

I am having a good time with the Wendy Johnson knit-a-long.  I had a brief period of panic when I realized that I didn’t have enough yarn, and that the color had been discontinued, but I found it online and a skein arrived today.  Yay.

Photos don’t do clumped up unblocked lace much justice, but here is where I am.

It’s getting warm in Colorado too!  Davey and I spent some time outside this afternoon.  He got out the bowls and water.

The dark shadow to his left in this picture is the Koko Puff.  She was curious to see what he was doing.   (she’s also learned that where he is, there are also usually crumbs nearby.  Crumbs or some type of delicious morsels which she will attempt to pilfer.)

Davey was performing an experiment,  and apparently it was serious business. (I also seriously need to sweep the porch.  The wind howled last night and the yard was a mess this morning!)

I tried to coax a smile out of him.

He tried to resist.

But he just couldn’t do it.

Mile High Baseball

Yesterday we took Davey to his first professional baseball game.

(I liked my shot I just happened to get of the pitcher, although it was taken from 29 miles away!)

It was a cloudy day, so while the mountains looked pretty in the background, it’d be really nice on a bright sunny day.

So we went to the game.  We started working our way up to our seats.  Up and UP and UP and we kept going up.  The last escalator to the upper deck was very steep.  I have bad dreams about steepness such as that.

Here’s how high we were.   See that purple row of bleachers?

You can see it better here.

That row of seats represents the mile high mark.  We were a couple of rows above that.  I didn’t move until we left.  It was rather dizzying, although we adjusted after awhile.

That said, we could still see great, and it was so much fun.

We met our neighbor and his daughters at the game.  He had the extra tickets, and it was fun to get to know another one of our new neighbors.  Here is what Davey did when he was introduced to the daughters (they were probably 10 and 13 or so?).

First he hid his head in David’s arm, and then he carefully peeked around.

Davey stayed very busy.

He learned about baseball.

The whole notion of baseball really doesn’t interest him too much yet.

He really enjoyed shelling peanuts.  Not eating them.  Shelling them.  “Here Mommy!  I have a peanut for you!”

He drank some lemonade.

He ate most of a hotdog.  (Ketchup only please).

He didn’t always like the loud noises, but he liked clapping and the events between the innings.

We looked for ourselves on the jumbotron thing, but we didn’t come up.

“Is that us Davey?”

“No Mommy.  That’s not us!”

He made a trek back down the mountain to find a potty with Daddy.  (I document it all!)

And returned safe, sound and happy.

By the 4th inning he was winding down already.  (The first inning had been very long and exciting.  The Rockies scored 6 runs.)  So by the time the 4th inning came around, it was getting close to 7pm and Davey was getting tired.

But then he spotted the guy selling cotton candy, and he was revived.

After he had eaten his fill of cotton candy, he was ready to go once again.

It was time to head home.  Davey made it 2 hours which was a long long time for a 3 year old to sit in one place.   And he told us that he is ready to go to another game!

(It turns out we’d picked a good night to go.  Rockies won 15-4.)

Vacuuming with Daddy and a visit to Rock Creek Farm

Davey was very excited to help Daddy vacuum this morning.  It was his first time to wield a vacuum.

He thought this was pretty fun, but the vacuum was a little noisy for him.

Yesterday Davey and I went to the Rock Creek Farm Preserve.

Davey wanted to have a picnic, and it needed to be just right.  He did not want to eat at the picnic table.  He wanted a picnic blanket spread out on the ground.  It was a little chilly in the shade so I went scurrying back to the car for a long-sleeved shirt.  The picnic blanket doubled as a blanket for his legs.

Davey likes to wear “Daddy’s ballcap”.  “Mommy.  Daddy  made it the right size for me!”

After we ate, we went exploring.

Davey cooperated for a “Davey stand there so I can take a picture of you with the lake behind you” shot.

Davey picked up rocks.  “Mommy.  They are for my rock collection!  I’m starting one today!”

We looked at cattails.  That word was a source of confusion, but we got it straightened out.  No animals were harmed in the formation of the cattails.  It took me awhile to convince Davey of this.

Ok David and Davey are now in the dusting phase and I must go help!
