Ione and the magician

I finished “Ione” the other day.  It was a crescent shawlette pattern, and I knitted with a great yarn that I’d not tried out before.   It’s called Prism Saki and I got it when I was visiting my friends at Knit Unto Others in Arkadelphia.  It was so nice to knit with.  This pattern was great too.  It has a lace edging and then garter stitch.  The garter stitch is done in many short rows for the shaping.

The pattern was easy to follow and the lace section was really fun.

Davey helped me model it.

He was dancing around.

He also has been playing magician.

He performed a magic trip for me.

“Here we have a bag that is empty.”

“Abra-ca-dabra!”

“What?  Handkerchiefs!”

“Tada!”

Happy Father’s Day 2012! (and a little Mochimochi)

Happy Father’s Day!  We are having a nice but productive morning.  I had to go to the grocery store, pay bills and water. Davey loves to help me water.  We’ve been watering for the neighbors while they are out of town, and he thinks this is just great fun.  It was in the 70s yesterday.  Beautiful.  Today?  96.  That just seems like a crazy jump to me.

David is cleaning for Father’s Day.  He just finished all the floors.  A very clean house is probably his favorite possible Father’s Day present.  Davey helped and Koko got underfoot following everywhere.  I dusted.  This Colorado is dusty.

I got no satisfactory pictures of David for Father’s Day gift opening.  I was given the ok to put this one up.  I told David it was blurry.  His response?  “Exactly.”

Davey loves delivering the presents.  There’s not much he likes better than a good celebration.  I am in a little bit of trouble for not buying balloons.  He felt better though once he remembered that we are going to make cupcakes this afternoon.

Notice the artwork by the stairs.  We have several beautiful paintings around the house compliments of Davey and a lot of tape.

I knitted some little things for my dad for his Father’s Day.  He built this awesome dollhouse a few years ago, and we thought it would be fun to have some knitted objects in it.  So I looked at my great Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi book, and I picked out a few things to knit.

My favorite thing that I made was this mailbox (it’s about 2.5 inches tall I think):

Here’s an idea of the scale of these little things.  You might not immediately determine that the following is a record player.

Anna Hrachovec writes really nice patterns.  They are a little tricky because many are in the round and are done with size zero or size one needles.  But I’ve gotten better at it with practice.

I also made a gnome (every house needs a little gnome!) and a telephone.

Pretty fun!

Happy Father’s Day!  We are off to California Pizza Kitchen for lunch.  David loves their spaghetti which may be the garlickiest dish on the planet, but it’s his favorite.

Patchwork socks are complete! And another Karate Show and Love Party!

I finished my patchwork socks.  I’d joined a knit a long on ravelry, where the mission was to knit up a pair of socks using leftover sock yarn.  I have some of this, so I picked out yarns that I hoped would work well together.  I am happy with the result.  I love them lots actually.  They fit so nicely too.  The KAL was done by Susan B Anderson, and I used her pattern “How I Make My Socks“.

When I used to knit more socks, I’d get a picture of Davey’s feet in there with mine.  It’s been awhile, and his feet sure are growing!

Davey transferred to a Little Gym closer to our house and has been going there for the last 3 weeks.  He was actually going to karate at two gyms for a few weeks.  I was hoping this would ease the transition.  I think it has worked out well. So this resulted in him getting to participate in another big end of the year show.

Another medal.  Always fun!

He was in the mood to crawl.  First he had fun crawling across the low beam.

And then across the high beam with a little help from his instructor.

This evening he wanted to have a “pretend” love party for David.  So that meant that all the decorations, cake, candles and presents were all made of his cardboard blocks.  David received “5 Gold Watches”.  Davey insisted on a tripod for the camera as well.  Also created from more cardboard blocks. I like the result (except I’m looking rather scruffy and somewhat pale next to David!).  I love how Davey has his arms around us.

Patchwork Sock

I was reading some knitting blogs the other day, and I came upon a description of a Ravelry knit along that looked fun.  It’s a “sockalong”.  I’ve not knitted socks in a year or so, and I’ve missed it!  The idea of the knit along is to just use leftover sock yarn.  I have some of this.  I wasn’t sure how it was going to look, but I tried to pick out some colors that I thought would be ok together.  I finished the first sock today.  I think it is one of my all time favorite socks.  It also fits great.  I used this basic sock pattern from Susan B Anderson.

I think my favorite sock to knit is just a plain basic stockinette stitch – especially in fun yarn – or especially like with this sock where I changed colors every ten rows.

I didn’t want to try to get Davey to take a picture, and David wasn’t here so I put my sock on a sock blocker and used the marimba keys to help pose it.  Very handy!

One thing I learned from knitting these socks was a nice way to finish off those ends.  I had lots of ends to weave.

I may be one of the last knitters to have learned this handy method, but I watched a video by Susan B Anderson, and then I tried it out. It is easy, fast, and efficient.

At each color change, you just take the two yarn ends and tie them in a simple knot.

Then you take the end and run it up and down several stitches in a row through the purl bumps.

Then you trim the ends.  So easy.  Finishes it up so nicely.  Looks great!

Davey had his “big shows” today at The Little Gym.  He had one for his karate class and one for his Giggleworms class.  He had a great time.  David and I were poised with our camera and videocamera.   I had to switch to my phone when the videocamera battery died (I’d not properly charged it).  So we got lots of footage and some pictures.  Here’s Davey with Mr. Nick getting his karate medal.  He loved that.

Friday = puny kid and catching up

Davey and I are hanging out today.  He is kinda puny.  Yesterday he had a fever all day but today so far so good.  I can’t convince him yet though to get out of his pajamas.  I even offered to just switch out pajamas.  He’s had these on for two days so I think it’s time.  That’s the next goal after I finish this.

I’m taking pictures off my camera this morning, putting some up on flickr, and on facebook.  I am also finishing up a sock!  I started it over a year ago.  All that remained was decreasing the toe and kitchener.  I’m down to kitchener now. I really like this self striping yarn in all my favorite shades of green.  It’s from Knitpicks.

I do have to make the second sock still.  Hopefully it won’t be another year before I finish the pair!

Update:  Davey is dressed!

Sunday and Davey’s Knitting

We are having a nice day at home.  Davey is playing with his village.  Last I heard, “frost giants were attacking it”.  He’s very busy.

He picked me out a keychain for Mother’s Day.

I love it!

Yesterday, he told me that he wanted to learn to knit.  I told him that he might not be quite ready to take knitting on, but that I’d certainly try to teach him.  He did get his little fingers wrapped nicely around the needles.

By the looks of his thumbnail, it looks like he went straight from playing in the dirt to knitting.  This is certainly possible.

He sat in my lap and I held his hands, but I thought he did great for the first time. He learned how to insert the needle into the stitch and could pretty much do that on his own.  I had to wrap the yarn around for him, but then he was pretty good at sliding the new stitch off.  He wants to keep practicing.  He’s off to a good start.

Spring Soccer comes to an End and a little Knitting

This morning was Davey’s last soccer practice/game.  It was really cold out though.  Still is!  40 degrees, but there was no wind so it wan’t too miserable.  I think he liked the cool air.  He is so hot-natured that maybe it invigorated him.  He scored a couple of goals!

He was really proud of his trophy.

We also got his team pictures back.  His individual ones are quite cute.  His team photo is cute too but in a different way.  I didn’t want to totally violate copyright, so I just took a shot of part of his team photo. I’m not sure what is going on here.  He wasn’t upset, but it was pretty bright and warm that day I think.

Davey had a great team and great coaches.  We will miss them.  I think that in the fall he moves from co-ed to all boys.

Now we are looking forward to tee-ball.  He will try this out for the first time next month.

And I’ve been knitting some too.  I finished a really fun beret the other day.  I made it with Manos del Uruguay.  Such nice yarn to knit with.  It’s a fair trade company and non-profit too.  It was created to help women in Uruguay.  It’s some of my favorite yarn to knit with.

This pattern was a lot of fun too.  It’s called Early Morning Beret.  It’s a free pattern, and I highly recommend it!

One Step Forward and Two Steps Back

Well, I was going great guns on my first flap for the convertible mitts that I am knitting.  I thought I had the placement of the flap correctly visualized. I would stop every once in awhile and kind of mock try it on, placing the flap up over my fingers.  Looked great.

Then when I was getting ready to decrease, I tried it on once more.  I don’t know what I was thinking, but I had it totally backwards weird wrong, and so here is where I am now.

Ugh.  I feel like I am a reasonably intelligent person, but trying to picture the way the flap should go causes me quite abit of pain. The last time I made some of these, I had to take a sock and put it over the top to figure out how the flap should be positioned.  That worked well.  I should have done that this time, but I thought I had it all figured out.  David also drew me a picture to help me figure out the whole “hinge” factor.  I should also have sought out his help prior to my poor first attempt.

Oh well good thing I am a process knitter and not a product knitter. 🙂 So I’ll try again.

I did knit a snake yesterday.  I started that Harry Potter Cup on ravelry, and one of the homework options for “Flying” class was to knit something you are afraid of.  So to to make sure I could get at least one homework assignment done this month, I whipped out a snake bookmark. He’s kinda cute I think.

Davey yells quite dramatically and runs for the hills every time I show it to him.  I appreciate his theatrics.

For my next homework assignment, I am attempting entrelac.  It’s going to be a scarf made with Zauberball.  Really fun sock yarn. I’ll take some pictures.

It’s time to get the Wee Tot to bed.  We are starting to read short chapter books together.  Last night we read The Know Nothings.  I think it’s been around for awhile.  Morris, Boris, Dorris and Norris are pretty funny!

Podster, Potter and a photograph

I’ve not had an alliterative blog title in awhile.  It was time.

I have decided to focus on one knitting project at a time (I doubt anyone will believe this.  I don’t, but I’m going to try).  I started some Podster Gloves for a friend.  I was worried that they were going to be too big for her, so I mailed them off for a “fitting”.  She assures me that they are fine.  I still am worried that they are a little big, but I am moving forward.  These gloves have half fingers and then the optional flap you can pull over to make them a mitten. I am knitting them with Shibui sock yarn.  It’s awesome.  I love knitting with it.

I am a little worried though, and I hope I am not in absolute denial.  I am afraid that I don’t have enough yarn to finish this glove.  I have to finish the flap and then do the thumb (it will also have a flap option).

That doesn’t look like a lot of yarn.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

And while I claim that I am focusing on one project at a time, I decided to participate in the Harry Potter cup on Ravelry.  It’s this massive knitting group.  I was sorted and am in Ravenclaw.   There is a 3 month term. You have to complete one project per month.  The projects have themes based on the course you choose (Potions, Herbology, etc).  I think it is going to be great fun.  I’ve got to decide on a project though!  You can work on more difficult projects – for OWLS and NEWTs. I don’t even quite know how all that works yet.  I’m starting with the basics.

And last, but certainly not least, I want to include a Davey picture.  I have a new very favorite picture that I took with my phone the other day.  It’s of Davey and my grandfather.

Knitting again!

My semester is over and except for finishing up some grading and posting my grades, I am pretty much free for a few weeks.  Yay.  I’ve been getting a chance to knit more again.

I actually finished something yesterday.  Back in November I’d started a pattern called “198 Yards of Heaven”.  It’s a lace shawlette.  I’m happy to have finished it because this is one of those projects that I’d failed on a few times when I was still trying to figure out lace.

I used some Plymouth Happy Feet that I had purchased from Knit Unto Others in Arkadelphia.  I love this yarn, but it’s dk and ideally the shawl should have been done in worsted.  Not necessarily, ideally on the yarn weight – I guess ideally I would have done one more pattern repeat to have made it a little larger.

It will be a great kerchief though I think.

It’s a great pattern created by Christy Verity.  It’s been knit almost 3,900 times on ravelry!

I knit Davey a little bunny “nugget” the other day.  I put it in his Easter basket.  It’s a free pattern by Rebecca Danger.

He’s a cute little fellow and was a quick knit.  Davey likes him, but he is worried because the Bunny Nugget doesn’t have any legs.  He wants legs for him.

And finally – as a reward to me for being just about finished with the semester, I’m finally getting to play with the Mawata (Silk Hankies) that I got for Christmas.

This is a stack of layers and layers of silk.  You take each layer and draft it.  I’m still figuring this out and will post some pictures when I get it a little more mastered.  It’s fun though.  You draft it into yarn (basically put a hole in the middle of the square and then you slowly start pulling and pulling until you get a length of yarn the thickness you want.  The hard part is achieving an even consistency).

We shall see how it goes.
