Lovely Lace

My shawl was ready to be released from the wires and pins this morning.

I’m really happy with it.

Davey helped me.  Well, he really just ran from me when I wanted to take a quick shot.

He hesitated for just a fraction of a second here, and I was able to get a shot.

Escape!

And I was left alone to take more pictures of my shawl.

David watched the finals of the French Open this morning.  He is a big fan of Roger Federer.  The match drove him crazy.  He’d say, “I just can’t stand it!”

Davey enjoyed this and repeated it often: “Mommy.  We just can’t stand this!”

And unfortunately Federer did lose to Nadal, but it was a great match.

Blocking with Davey and the Hulk

I blocked my Wendy Johnson Mystery Shawlette this morning.   Yesterday I’d bought blocking wires, and what a world of difference that made.  It was so much easier than when I attempted to block my Seaside Shawlette with pins only.

I also had my blocking squares which made it that much easier.

Davey helped me of course.  He was measuring things with the yardstick.  Then Hulk got involved as well.

Then Davey and Hulk had a pillow fight.

Then Davey decided to play some Elefun.

Now the shawl is drying.  It was a wonderful pattern.  I did not have to have a cone of silence around me.  I could even watch some tv while I was knitting it.

I love lace.  I can’t wait to knit more.  I need to get back to my Joy of Sox and I will, but I am kind of hooked on lace.

I never thought I would say that!

So now I am about done writing.  Davey and I are singing “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash.  He loves that song.

Water Park Time Again and Mowing

Davey and I made our first trip to the water park today.  Davey was anxious to go back having had so much fun almost daily last summer at the Arkadelphia waterpark.

It’s a great waterpark.  Lots of space to spread out and have a picnic, and they have some nice areas for small children.  But there is a difference here, and it’s about the water temperature.  The water at the Arkadelphia park was more on the hot tub side.  The water at the Broomfield park is more like an icy Rocky Mountain stream.  It’s still early in the season though.  Maybe it will warm up abit.  It gets pretty cool here at night though, so then that drops the water temperature again.

It was 90 degrees today but the wind was blowing really hard.  It picked up speed after we’d been there a couple of hours and Davey was shivering.  For us, it was time to head home, but many of the kids would play play play and then go huddle up in a towel.

Until the wind really picked up though, it was really nice.  Davey had a great time playing around in a shallow kids’ pool.  We’ll definitely spend some more time there this summer.

Then this afternoon, Davey helped David mow for the first time.  He thought it was great fun.

Little does he know that David is passing on mowing duties.

Ok.  Maybe not quite yet.

Mystery Knit-a-long and Don’t you Smile!

I am having a good time with the Wendy Johnson knit-a-long.  I had a brief period of panic when I realized that I didn’t have enough yarn, and that the color had been discontinued, but I found it online and a skein arrived today.  Yay.

Photos don’t do clumped up unblocked lace much justice, but here is where I am.

It’s getting warm in Colorado too!  Davey and I spent some time outside this afternoon.  He got out the bowls and water.

The dark shadow to his left in this picture is the Koko Puff.  She was curious to see what he was doing.   (she’s also learned that where he is, there are also usually crumbs nearby.  Crumbs or some type of delicious morsels which she will attempt to pilfer.)

Davey was performing an experiment,  and apparently it was serious business. (I also seriously need to sweep the porch.  The wind howled last night and the yard was a mess this morning!)

I tried to coax a smile out of him.

He tried to resist.

But he just couldn’t do it.

Mile High Baseball

Yesterday we took Davey to his first professional baseball game.

(I liked my shot I just happened to get of the pitcher, although it was taken from 29 miles away!)

It was a cloudy day, so while the mountains looked pretty in the background, it’d be really nice on a bright sunny day.

So we went to the game.  We started working our way up to our seats.  Up and UP and UP and we kept going up.  The last escalator to the upper deck was very steep.  I have bad dreams about steepness such as that.

Here’s how high we were.   See that purple row of bleachers?

You can see it better here.

That row of seats represents the mile high mark.  We were a couple of rows above that.  I didn’t move until we left.  It was rather dizzying, although we adjusted after awhile.

That said, we could still see great, and it was so much fun.

We met our neighbor and his daughters at the game.  He had the extra tickets, and it was fun to get to know another one of our new neighbors.  Here is what Davey did when he was introduced to the daughters (they were probably 10 and 13 or so?).

First he hid his head in David’s arm, and then he carefully peeked around.

Davey stayed very busy.

He learned about baseball.

The whole notion of baseball really doesn’t interest him too much yet.

He really enjoyed shelling peanuts.  Not eating them.  Shelling them.  “Here Mommy!  I have a peanut for you!”

He drank some lemonade.

He ate most of a hotdog.  (Ketchup only please).

He didn’t always like the loud noises, but he liked clapping and the events between the innings.

We looked for ourselves on the jumbotron thing, but we didn’t come up.

“Is that us Davey?”

“No Mommy.  That’s not us!”

He made a trek back down the mountain to find a potty with Daddy.  (I document it all!)

And returned safe, sound and happy.

By the 4th inning he was winding down already.  (The first inning had been very long and exciting.  The Rockies scored 6 runs.)  So by the time the 4th inning came around, it was getting close to 7pm and Davey was getting tired.

But then he spotted the guy selling cotton candy, and he was revived.

After he had eaten his fill of cotton candy, he was ready to go once again.

It was time to head home.  Davey made it 2 hours which was a long long time for a 3 year old to sit in one place.   And he told us that he is ready to go to another game!

(It turns out we’d picked a good night to go.  Rockies won 15-4.)

Vacuuming with Daddy and a visit to Rock Creek Farm

Davey was very excited to help Daddy vacuum this morning.  It was his first time to wield a vacuum.

He thought this was pretty fun, but the vacuum was a little noisy for him.

Yesterday Davey and I went to the Rock Creek Farm Preserve.

Davey wanted to have a picnic, and it needed to be just right.  He did not want to eat at the picnic table.  He wanted a picnic blanket spread out on the ground.  It was a little chilly in the shade so I went scurrying back to the car for a long-sleeved shirt.  The picnic blanket doubled as a blanket for his legs.

Davey likes to wear “Daddy’s ballcap”.  “Mommy.  Daddy  made it the right size for me!”

After we ate, we went exploring.

Davey cooperated for a “Davey stand there so I can take a picture of you with the lake behind you” shot.

Davey picked up rocks.  “Mommy.  They are for my rock collection!  I’m starting one today!”

We looked at cattails.  That word was a source of confusion, but we got it straightened out.  No animals were harmed in the formation of the cattails.  It took me awhile to convince Davey of this.

Ok David and Davey are now in the dusting phase and I must go help!

Baby Owls and M&Ms

Davey and I went exploring at a park not far from our house yesterday.  There’s a small lake and lots of birds (and turtles we were told.  We looked, but we didn’t find any turtles).  We also noticed an area of tall trees that had been blocked off with orange fencing stuff.  A lady saw us looking and she explained to us that they were protecting an owl family.  There is a mommy, daddy and 3 baby owls living there.

We found the owls.  I tried to take a picture.  I drew the arrow in because I couldn’t zoom in the way I wanted.   (We are looking forward to buying a better zoom one of these days!)

Anyway that owl is just a couple of months old.  He seemed really big to me already.  Of course, I have no idea how fast owls grow up.  We’re going to take David over there, and we’ll bring some binoculars to get a closer look.

Similarly, I had no idea about this duck.

There were two adult Canada Geese nearby, so Davey quickly determined that this duck was their baby.  I felt that this was probably incorrect, but since I don’t really know much about black ducks, I figured I’d go with it.  Again, need better zoom – but isn’t he pretty with that white bill?  We’d not seen one like that before.

Broomfield does nature walks for preschool kids.  We’re going to go on some.  Davey needs someone knowledgeable to navigate him (us) through these things.

Of course in any exploration outing, snacks are crucial.  “Mommy!  What did you bring us?”

Yesterday it was Capri Suns (Pretty Suns as he calls them) and some M&Ms.

Davey enjoys exploring.  Yesterday he kept looking for ants.  He also told me that “mean people catch frogs”.   I don’t know where he got this.  (He also told me that coyotes eat little kids.  He apparently learned this from one of his little friends.  He was pretty casual about sharing this with me though, so I’m thinking he was not convinced that this was true.)

It is a beautiful morning, so I’m getting ready to pack us a lunch and we are going to go exploring again.   Need to avoid sandwiches though unless we want to gobble them down.  This mountain air dries out a sandwich like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Show and Friends

Davey had his Winter/Spring show at “tumblin” yesterday.  (He’s already asked this morning if we have “tumblin'” again today!)

He had a great time.  They did a short routine as a group and then individually.  They got on the beam and the bars.

Davey has made a new friend in tumbling.  This happened last week.  He loves loves his new friend.  For the first time, when the teacher called them back to the mat, Davey was not interested.  He was playing with his new friend.

So we talked about being respectful and listening to the teacher.  Yesterday he was ready to go back and be a good listener.  Poor kid.  He did great.  I say poor kid, because he was just so torn at times.  Some of the 3 year olds still just go where the wind takes them, but he knows he can sit and listen to the teacher.  He’d be sitting as the teacher asked, but some of his friends would be running around the room willy nilly.   I could see the turmoil in Davey.  Every once in awhile he’d reach out his arm for them.  And a couple of times, he ran willy nilly with them too, but I could see him really trying!

Here he is with his medal.  He is  proudly standing by one of his new friends (I cropped most of the friend out as I didn’t get permission to put his photo up).

I’m just not quite sure what to think about this picture.  He looks like such a big grown-up kid here!

More and more and more and more Superheroes

The first words I heard from Davey this morning as he walked into our room and climbed into bed were – well, I don’t actually remember because I was still half asleep,  but it had something to do  with Thor.

He can sit on his bed and spend a very long time looking at this:

It’s a Marvel poster that David has probably had for 20 years.  It’s got every possible Marvel superhero and supervillain (or every one in existence 20 years ago.  Do they add new ones periodically?)

Davey studies the poster carefully.

He finally focuses on a certain guy:

“Mommy, will you tell me a story about Captain America?”

I try.

Alpacas and Neighbors

Davey has met our neighbors across the street.  There are two girls:  5 and 2.  Davey is hanging out with the 5 year old right now.  They’ve been playing off and on all day long.  When he came home for lunch earlier he said, “Mommy.  This is the best day ever!”  He loves making new friends.   David and I are enjoying making new neighbor friends as well.

Yesterday we went to the national alpaca show.  There were a skillion alpacas there.  We strolled around and looked at them.   Several nice people stopped with their alpacas (who were en route to being showed or sheared or maybe both!) and let Davey pet the alpacas.  He thought that was pretty neat.

We learned that after an alpaca has been sheared (I guess that’s the right word?), they have very, and I mean very, skinny necks.  We were not quite convinced those necks were capable of holding up their heads.

We watched the alpaca show.  Davey really enjoyed that for awhile.  We liked seeing them get their ribbons.

Davey is explaining something to us here.

I checked out the fiber vendors.  There was not a lot of yarn, but I found some that I liked.  I didn’t buy any though.  Got a business card so maybe I can order some later.

Davey’s friend is now here and they are playing with superheroes and maybe his farm animals now.   There were lots of Barbies at her house.  They found him a Ken though!

It’s a fun day for Davey!
