Sunday: Meet Mr. T-rex & Windy Park Day

Today was the day.  T-Rex was free of his shell.  David and Davey were downstairs a little before me this morning so I didn’t actually see the little T-rex come out of what remained of his shell.  The water was getting kinda murky though and it was definitely time.

Meet little T-Rex. (It’s amazing how much fun we’ve had waiting for this guy to come out of his shell.)  It is interesting that despite being a rubbery/plastic guy,  he is still a bit cold and soggy even after hours out of the water.

That didn’t stop Davey from having fun playing with him while I took some pictures.

“Rawr” or whatever sound it is that a T-rex made.

Small pleasures.

Then we decided to go to the park early to try to avoid the wind.  We didn’t quite succeed.  It was gusty, but I guess not quite as windy as it became this afternoon.

We checked out a new playground.

We ran around on the football/soccer field.  Davey ran and ran and ran and ran.

Davey never gets tired of playing chase.

He loves to say “last one there is a ‘rot – ten’ egg!”

He ran the 50 yard dash.

I watched him running down the field, and I took a series of pictures.  He just loves to run and move, and it’s just fun to watch.

And still he kept on running.

And then he stopped and was probably wondering why the heck we weren’t following him!

So we did.

Mile High Excursion

Today we decided to check out the Mile High Flea Market.

When I go to flea markets I always hope to find fun little treasures amidst old junk.  There was not much of this at this flea market.  It was pretty much just – well – new junk.  There were a few sections where people had brought in some old/used stuff, but I didn’t find anything.

That was ok though.  It was beautiful out, and we enjoyed walking around.

Plus there was fresh kettle corn.  That alone may have made the trip worth it.

And even better?  A couple of carnival rides that were just Davey’s size.

He loved it!

The first time he rode the second ride, he “chauffeured”  a little bitty boy.  Davey checked on him pretty frequently to make sure all was well.

I like his expression here.

Lunch at El Jardin.  Very good Mexican Restaurant.  Now home.  I went to the library to replenish Davey’s books.  Davey and David are “rassling” at the moment.

We wait for the dinosaur and make cupcakes

The dinosaur is slowly chipping away at his shell (ok or the shell is dissolving). Davey has determined that he is a t-rex.

We pretend to be a little scared!

And then we decided to make cupcakes.

We made the Pioneer Woman’s recipe.

Here is something I should not have done.  The recipe calls for baking soda and vinegar (among other things).  Well, I could not resist putting the vinegar directly onto the baking soda in the bowl so that I could show Davey the fun bubbly reaction.

I think I deactivated the baking soda?  Many of the cupcakes had little sinkholes in the middle.  They still tasted good though and actually it was a chance to sneak more icing on there.

Davey decorated them.  He went with a combination of star sprinkles and M&Ms.

Then he wanted to eat one (meaning he wanted to lick all the “icin'” off one.)

Then he made a big mess with the icin’ and so he decided he needed to get rid of his icin’ed clothes.

Maybe tomorrow the t-rex will have emerged completely from his shell.  Davey will be downstairs first thing in the morning to check.

No Flitting

ok no more flitting – only focus.

I am ready to finish this sock.

And I have turned the corner.  I am on the homestretch (pretty much). (I am not thrilled with my heel.  I have some trouble when it comes time to pick up and knit the wraps.  Oh well – more practice.)

In other news, we are waiting for a dinosaur to hatch.

My sister and family sent Davey a “dinosaur egg”.  It is supposed to “hatch” after about 24 hours in water.  There is a green reptilian scale kind of peeking out now.  It’s freaking me out a little.  Davey is fascinated and keeps checking on his dinosaur.

Davey & Koko Puff

Last night Davey decided he was going to put Koko to bed and get her all tucked in.

Koko, the 15 year old Chow, was not having any of it.

This did not phase Davey.

Davey prepared her bed.   He spread out a quilt and brought in Winkie the Bear.

Unfortunately, Koko was on the move.  Now Koko watches over Davey.  She sits by his bed.  She is curious about what he does throughout the day.  She, however, does not want to play (or be tucked into bed).

Davey was not deterred.  If Koko would not come to her “bed”, the “bed” would come to Koko.

Koko decided she’d better leave the room.  (Poor old girl.  Her posture reminds me of Eeyore.)

Davey tried to lure her back.  He got out pieces of a car track (tan plastic strips which vary in length).   He told Koko that they were “international dog bones”.    She was not interested.

Davey is nothing if not persistent.  He went right after her.

A few minutes later, David and I heard Davey talking to Koko.  They were downstairs.  Davey was holding up a picture of Koko and Timber.  He was saying something like “Isn’t this so so precious?”  I couldn’t find the picture on my computer so I took a picture of a picture.

After that, I think Davey let Koko have some peace.

I’m thinking Koko might appreciate us finding a younger more energetic dog to play with Davey.

I need more Perseverance.

I’ve been a flitty knitter lately.  That is I flit from project to project.  That’s a nice way of putting it.  I could say that I am lacking the “stick-with-its”.  Or I could argue back that I’m knitting and it’s my beloved hobby so I should knit whatever the heck I want.

I do have these arguments with myself.

But I did finish a second pair of “Jiffy Mitts“.  These are a fun simple knit, and they are a good way to try to bust through some of my yarn.  I used most of the rest of my “Murderous Honey” yarn.

I also had some Page Wood Farms Denali yarn which needed to be used up.   I decided to knit another Perseverance Shawl.  I made one last summer before we left Arkadelphia.

It’s a great pattern to stick in my purse and to pull out whenever I get the chance to knit on it.  I wore the finished one a lot this past winter.  Those shawlettes are great to wrap around your neck and are nice and warm.

And finally.  Here’s where I need the Perseverance.  I’ve been working on these diligently for the last 4 evenings.  Here’s how far I am.

Not very far.  But they are fun to knit.  Besides that I need the practice with the 2 circular needles.  I don’t have problems with “ladders” when I knit on dpns, but I have got some ladder problems with these circulars.  So I am working on giving firm tugs between needles and trying to figure out how to eliminate those ladders.  Part of the problem is that the first stitch is often a purl and to me that makes it harder to avoid the ladder thing.

But these are wonderful socks and a joy to knit.

(That may be stretching things just a tad.  I do really like them but more importantly I decided that I was not going to whine about how freaking slow they are.)

oops.

Oh Yes, Oh Yes, It’s Springtime!

The title represents Davey’s current favorite Little Einsteins episode, and as it so happens, it is also becoming very Springlike around here!

It was beautiful out this afternoon, and Davey was feeling better.  So we spent some time outside.

He practiced his throwing.  He was having a little trouble really rearing back to throw until I told him to pretend he was throwing one of his toys when he gets mad.  That helped him.   A lot.  Maybe not my best idea.

And he practiced catching.  It was one of those velcro pad catchers.  I had no idea the strength of the stick when the ball attaches.  Davey could hardly work it off there.

Then he decided that kicking the ball would be more fun followed by throwing the ball around the yard and chasing it.  That was followed by finding a small green leaf and bringing it to me.  A lovely gift in my favorite shade of green!

*David was actually an important part of the ball throwing lesson.   The best evidence I have is Daddy hands helping Davey to throw.

House of Colds

We spent a lazy day at home today.  I worked on my lace.  I finished another pair of “Jiffy Mitts”  (I need to take some pictures.)  We watched the Masters.

I am just now where I am able to watch golf without having nausea flashbacks.  The year I was pregnant with Davey, I stayed pretty green and so I laid on the couch and watched a lot of golf.  Sometimes I watched all 4 days of the tournaments.  It was a glorious green time (Outside and Inside!)   It’s just this spring that I think I am over it!

So anyway.  David and Davey were miserable today.  I don’t know how Davey stayed so almost completely good-natured today.  His eyes and nose just ran all day long.  It was pitiful.

He ate well and was pretty energetic for much of the day.  He’s looking a little more pretty bright-eyed here.

Let’s see.  I made some muffins this morning.  I mention it because it is my favorite muffin recipe ever.  They are called “To Die For Blueberry Muffins”.   They are delicious.  They have a crumb type topping.  I didn’t think it would be possible to have too much buttery/sugary/cinnamony topping, but I found it to be possible.  So now I just make 1/2 of the crumb topping part of the recipe, and I find that to be plenty.  I typically use frozen blueberries as well.

Ok, so I think it is time to go knit abit.  I really ought to work on that second crazy sock.

Coffee Table Art

So my parents are moving to northern Maine in a few weeks.  They’ve lived in Oklahoma almost my entire life so that would be over 43 years.  They are moving to a house right on the coast.  It is beautiful there.

Anyway, they are getting rid of some things as they are moving into a smaller house.  One of the things they are not taking is a worn-out coffee table they have had since I was a baby.  I wish I had a picture of it.  I probably have a picture from my pre-digital days.  Those poor photo albums are buried somewhere still.

The table was cherry and was an oval shape so that there were no sharp edges.   I am the oldest child and I used that table to help me learn to walk.  My sister and brother came 3 years and 6 years later, and they also practiced their first steps by walking around that table.

My dad is a woodturner and he came up with the idea that he would take the legs off the coffee table and make us each a vase.

Here it is:

Here it is with the top removed.

And then I was just having fun taking pictures of it.

It’s quite a treasure for us.

Random Queasy Friday

Today has been an interesting day.

First of all, I find myself returning to Jared Flood’s website to look at this shawl.  I’ve been back several times today.  I am going to make it.  I don’t know how, but I am thinking my encouraging friend Susan is going to be integral part of this.  The shawl has garter stitch.  Yay.  It also has “intricate Shetland lace motifs”.  That frightens me, but I am going to give it a whirl.  It seems that many have fallen in love with the shawl as the yarn is sold out.  And part of the attraction is the beautiful color, so I really want that yarn.  It would be best for me if it stayed sold out for a little while so that I could finish my first real attempt at a lace shawl.

I worked on my shawl for a little while last night.  I started a row kind of late.  I had a bad feeling as I began, and I kept warning myself that I really should not be doing this, but for some reason I continued.  And I messed up the row, and fixing it was going to be tough.  After some unknitting and muttering, I was able to get the shawl back on track. However, I was left with a couple of small lace holes (of the type that should be there) which are a little askew.   I am going to live with this.  That’s been one of my problems with lace.  I invariably messed up and then tried to rip it back then it really got all messed up and then bam it was all over.  So I am going to go forward having salvaged this I believe, in the hopes that I will go forth and it will all be perfect. (mostly. maybe not.)

I got a chance to knit on some fingerless gloves today quite abit.  Davey and I spent quite abit of time just lounging around.  Which as busy as we have been was probably not a bad thing at all. The three of us have some kind of what I thought was a minor stomach bug.  David is feeling better already.  Davey and I were kinda puny all day today.  No real stomach issues, we just felt kinda blech.  So this afternoon, Davey seemed to have perked up.  I decided to make a quick trip to the grocery store as we are getting pretty low around here.

So off we went.

I guess my first mistake was putting him in the car cart.  The one with the video player inside.  I noticed that after a few minutes he was kind of sprawled out on the seat.  Then the next thing I know, he is climbing out of the car cart looking rather green.  And then he threw up.  It was a small amount though and I was able to clean us up.

So now I have a cart almost completely full of groceries.  A big honking car cart.  Davey feels lousy and I am carrying him –  so I am toting a limp 37 pound Davey and trying to push a car cart – which also has a lousy wheel which wants to go whatever way it wants to go.

I decide to grab a couple more things on my way to the front of the store.   So we are also in the back of what is the biggest grocery store I have ever been in in my entire life.  It is an enormous King Soopers.  Huge.  So I start working my way to the front pausing to shift Davey from side to side.  I am trying to hurry – thinking kinda that well – he’s thrown up once, usually that makes a person feel ok at least for a little bit.  Long enough hopefully for me to get him back home.

We make it to the front of the store.  We are in front of the floral section.  All of a sudden Davey throws up again.  If you are squeamish about “spitting food” as Davey calls it, then I apologize.  But this was projectile majorly liquid.  He soaked me.  A minute passed as I was kind of in shock. (It was one of those time slowed down moments.) He did it again.  Big time.  Now I am scurrying.  To where I don’t know.  Now a third time.  At this point, we are both seriously soaking wet.  My shirt is soaked, half of my hair is wet.  Davey is wet from head to toe.  He is pointing at his wet shoes.  This upset him:  “Mommy!  My shoes!”

I looked around for help.  I really think the floral ladies were trying to avoid my eyes.  I can’t blame them at all.  We were standing in a large puddle of liquid.  I said, “can you help?”  Quickly they brought us a bag in case he had to “Spit food” again – I don’t know where anymore quantity could have come from.  Then they brought us some paper towels.  We were beyond paper towels.

I apologized profusely.  They were very kind and understanding.  I had to leave the full buggy behind.  They were nice about that as well.  I am sure they just wanted us out of there.  I said, “you guys are probably not going to want to eat for a week after this.”

So I got us out of there.  Poor sweet miserable boy. We took our soaking wet selves home and got cleaned up.  Davey has not thrown up again.  He’s not had much in the way of food and just a little drink, but we are hoping he’s past it.

I tell stories that I want to remember in my blog;  however,  I am pretty sure this day has been indelibly etched into my memory bank.
