Okayyyyy

I am feeling bloggily overwhelmed.  I have stories I want to post from over the last several weeks.  I may have to go chronologically a little out of order to get caught up.

Davey says okay to everything.  It means yes, but if you say do you want milk for dinner?  “okay”.  Did you like your pizza?  “okay”.  Do you want lemonade or milk?  “okay!”

He likes repeating whatever we say too.  We were playing a game and asking him what he wanted to eat. We’d say “cheese?”, and he would yell “no cheese!”.  So then we asked “pickle-os”?  He yelled “no pickle-os!”  We couldn’t resist asking him that several times as he said it so darn cute.

Darn. That’s another problem.  Apparently I say that word way too much.  Imagine – Davey has picked up on it!  “Darn it”, he says.  I suppose there are much worse things he could be hearing from me.   But I am still trying to limit my use of darn.  However, as David has pointed out, half the time I don’t even realize that I have said it.

This morning we went to the lake.  Davey had a great time.  It was his first experience of walking in sand barefoot.  He is a lot like his daddy when it comes to his feet.  So he’s a little uncomfortable with new foot sensations.  Like his daddy, he can sense the smallest grain of sand in his crocs, and he wants it out!  (Remember David is the one who has gotten rocks in his shoes while walking through the mall.)

Here’s Davey a little unsure about this whole sand thing:

Here he is stepping gingerly through the sand:

He soon gained confidence though and had fun digging with his shovel.  After he dug for awhile, we threw some rocks and waded a little.  Then we went walking around.  We walked over to a cove where we saw a big white crane of some type.  There was another cool smaller bird of some type.  Maybe some kind of tern?  He kind of scrunched his neck to hold his head down low when he walked.  Very cute.  Davey loved looking for the birds, and when they flew away to another area, he said, “Try again?”  And off we went to try to find them again.

This and That

Yesterday when I was at VBS, David and Davey walked to the bottom of the driveway.  That doesn’t sound like much does it?  Well our driveway looks like this:

025

That looks pretty steep doesn’t it?  Davey insisted on walking down all by himself without holding hands.  He did great.  He walked back up too.  I think Big D and Little D did some grunting as they went up and down, as Little D was working pretty hard!

Tonight for dinner, Davey ate strawberries, applesauce, and licked the peanut butter off the peanut butter and crackers.  He drank milk too.  Gosh he is particular right now.  The pediatrician has warned us several times, but it’s still frustrating!  Although, per Mayo Clinic (my child source) – we should not make a big deal out of it – as part of it is him learning about having control over certain things.  So we just go with it.  He will eat.  We took him to Little Italy for lunch.  He ate quite abit of spaghetti and bread.  David and I had already had lunch, and Davey had an early nap, so he woke up a little later.  In our desperation – we took him there.  We had a house salad.  He ate pretty darn well though.  (Last night he ate about 5 pinto beans at Janis’ house.  That was quite impressive! – I think he ate well because Kylie was there.  If there is an older child around, then he seems to kind of want to imitate, which includes eating a little more!)

He had a nice time at the waterpark today too.  He was very busy taking a stem of a leaf and using it as a “key”.  There was a locked up kiosk type thing, and it had several padlocks on it.  Davey tried to “unlock” them all.  He also saw an ant and got all the way down on his tummy to observe it.  He chased a butterfly too which was fun to watch, because he pretty much chased it in the exact same manner as the butterfly flew.  Very flitty.

Today when I was at VBS, David took him to the lake. They threw rocks in the lake, looked at big flock of turkey buzzards, and fed the ducks.  Then they both were uncomfortable with the rocks and sand that had accumulated in their shoes.  (Like father like son – David can get a rock in his shoe walking in the mall.)  So they stopped and cleaned up their feet, and then went on.  They had a good time.

Waterpark: Part Two

Today we went back to the waterpark.  We were not going to go today, but the house a/c quit; suddenly it seemed like a great time to go.  David stayed home and waited for the electrician, although he ran to the park and joined us after awhile.  (turns out our a/c is ok…for now.)

So at the park.  This time, I decided to take a few little toys for Davey to play with.  I thought this might help him gain confidence if he had some familiar things with him.  It really really helped. We took several little toys, but the big hit were these plastic spheres.  Actually three halves.  Each half of the plastic sphere has a hole in the bottom.  (They come in different sizes and help kids learn about colors, sizes, etc.)  Anyway, Davey played with them on the 4 sprayers.  The sprayers are like if you buried a hose up to its neck with just the nozzle sticking out.  Then a stream of water comes out in a big arc.  If you hit the arc of water just right, it caught the half sphere and carried it.  Davey played and played.

Then a little boy who is about 21 months old came over to Davey.  He was watching Davey playing with those spheres (I just don't know what else to call them – David suggested "plastic circles that break in half".)  Anyway, he inched closer to Davey, and Davey saw that he was interested.  So Davey slowly reached over and handed the little boy (Gabe) one of the spheres.  I was so proud of him – such nice sharing.  They proceeded to play together in the way that toddlers of this age play together.  They just kind of co-exist.  They both held the plastic things in the water, watched them fly in the air as the water carried them away.  A few times, when one of them got away from Davey, Gabe would pick it up and hand it back to Davey.  They played together so nicely.  I loved watching them.  Met Gabe's parents too which I also enjoyed.

Davey headed over to our chair and found his juice and goldfish ("fish").  He wanted lots of fish.  Gabe followed him over to our chair.  Gabe was very hungry too, and so they both had "fish".  It was time for Gabe to go home for dinner though so he had to leave.  It was so interesting to watch how they "interacted" without actually interacting.  I know that's typical for the age; I just hadn't seen it in action before.

After we got home and determined that the a/c was ok, I decided to bake some bread.  I got a wonderful new recipe (thank you Jennifer!).  I think one reason it also turned out so good is that I let the dough hook on my Kitchenaid do all the kneading.  It's a much better kneader then I am.

I put strawberry jam (which I made the other day!) on a slice (just about 20 minutes after it came out of the oven.)  Golly.  David and I determined that we could have eaten the whole loaf.  He had blackberry jelly though.   He's kind of scared of the strawberry jam.  I think Davey is going to like it all lots.  That's the mission these days:  Finding foods that Davey will eat!

Waterpark

We have started going to the waterpark.  It opened on Memorial Day weekend.  We went twice last week when Mikayla and Jadyn were here.  They had a great time. The first day we went was just a little too chilly.  They were shivering, but then they'd run back and play some more.  It wasn't cold, just a tad below being quite warm enough to be comfortable.  The water was not too warm either.  We went back today with Davey.

He doesn't know quite what to think yet.  He likes it, but he is still in "checking it all out mode".  He is feeling his way slowly.  He doesn't much like getting splashed by kids passing by.  They don't splash him on purpose – just the normal splashes of moving through the water.  He doesn't want to walk in the water much yet, although he gained a little more confidence today.  That's the thing – he is just slowly gaining confidence and figuring out what in the world all this water is.  It's a little bigger than his tub at home!

Once Upon a Time…there was a ….Pickle

In the last few days, we have been telling Davey stories before his bedtime or naptime to help him wind down.  The Spradlins have been here which has been very fun, but then Davey needs a little extra wind down help.

So David tells him stories.  David starts the story and then Davey fills in where he wants him to go.  David had told him a story about a pickle.  Davey really liked that so ever since then, David says, “Once upon a time, there was a …. and Davey jumps in to say:  “A pickle!”.   Davey is happy to fill in other parts of the story with words like monkeys, ducks, etc.  He likes to get involved in the story.

Bubble Butt

I want to post about our trip to the zoo, our trip to El Dorado yesterday, and our trip to pick strawberries in Donaldson the other day.  I am going to do that, but tonight I am just kind of tired, so I am going to post about Bubble Butt.

I was getting Davey ready for bed the other night, and I’d just put his pajama shorts on.  His shirt got kind of tucked into the back of his shorts, and his shorts were kind of bunched up over his diaper.  Before thinking, I observed, “Davey you look like you have a bubble butt.”  Not my brightest moment.  Davey loves to say bubble butt.  He can say it Clear as day.  “bubble butt.  bubble butt.”  I just hope he does not pick an inopportune moment to say it.  Of course he has no idea what he is saying.  And I have to admit it is very funny to hear him say it.  For some reason, David said it today in Walmart.  I can’t remember why.  Oh Davey picked up on that immediately and proceeded to repeat it over and over again.  So silly!

Well, I am revived and on a roll now, so I will continue.  We did take Davey to the zoo last Sunday.  I am actually kind of glad I waited to blog about it, because half the fun of the trip to the zoo has been listening to him talk about it ever since we got home.  He still talks about it every day.   Every once in awhile, he will come up to me and out of the blue say, “ducks in water”  or “chimps LOUD ahhhh ohhhhhhhhhh  ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”.  He also frequently mentions the “rang a tang way up high in air”.  (The orangutan was perched up on a seat way up high on a pole.)  He tells us that there were also turtles in the water and “camels riding” as there were kids and adults going on camel rides.

It was a very fun day.  At one point, he attempted to get as close as possible to 2 guineas.  He wasn’t scared at all.  The guineas were probably not too thrilled.

Davey talks

I am trying to remember all the first things that Davey is saying.  Every day I say – I need to blog this!  I need to blog that!

For example yesterday (Which was Mother’s Day and a nice day it was), Davey got into bed with us at about 6 am.  We had hopes that he might sleep a little more, but that was not to be.  Instead he said, “Hungry.  Toast.  Grapes.  Nanas.  Booce”.  That’s the first time he had told us he was hungry, and definitely the first time that he laid out the menu for us.

Today he said,  “Daddy home?”  I said, “yes, he’s just outside for a minute”.  Then Davey said, “All Day?”  He’s going to be so happy to realize that David is home for the summer.

Karen sent this shirt for Davey the other day.  I’d actually bought it for Mikayla and one for Jadyn several years ago.  It’s a 4T and if fits him really good already.  He loves it.  It’s so fun that we have it for him to wear.  As you can see though, it’s dirty.  That happens about 30 seconds after we put a clean shirt on him.  Yesterday we were in Pizza Hut, and there was a little girl in there.  She was about Davey’s age, or a little younger, and she was dressed a white dress with a full skirt.  She had a pretty curl pinned with a crisp ribbon in her perfectly brushed hair.  She didn’t look real.  Davey’s hair would have had jelly in it, the ribbon smooshed in his hand, and the dress covered with pizza sauce.  (If he were a girl of course – although I guess maybe that’s the point.  He’s not.)
Ok I went to bed with wet hair so it is just a mess.  As is my desk behind me.  I wanted to have a picture of our “mother/son” socks.  Davey’s socks were supposed to be for a 0-3 month size.  I made a swatch too if you can believe it.  His are cabled.  Mine have a mock cable which is really fun to do.  I have started the second of both socks.

Ok.  That’s it for now.

Snakes!

Friday, we had some work done on the front yard.  It was an untamed jungle.  Overgrown shrubs and ground cover – it was a real mess.  A mecca for snakes.  The three guys working on the yard were in a constant state of readiness as they waited for a snake to appear.  It didn't take too long.  A couple of hours after they began working, they unearthed what appeared to be a small snake.  Upon closer inspection they determined it was a pygmy rattler.  I was not at all thrilled at the idea of a rattlesnake in our yard.  However, I don't like the idea of killing snakes either.  However, he was poisonous, and so they killed him.  And Burned him.  In the street.  Not quite sure why they felt the need to burn him – well actually they did say something about getting rid of the venom.

Later, I was carefully making my way back into the house hoping not to see a snake.  I rounded the corner into the carport, and there was an almost 3 foot long snake slithering into the CARPORT.  I started yelling "Snake in Carport"  "There's a Snake in the Carport".  David came out and one of the guys helping us and they killed him too because they determined he was a Timber Rattler.  At this point, I was just about ready to put the For Sale sign up.  But I grew up in the country with snakes.  We had to keep our eye out for them.  Mom always said "Don't step where you can't see"  (like into a pile of leaves).  So instead we went into Operation Get Rid of Snakes.  We went to buy mothballs.  Lots of mothballs (because we have heard it is a good snake repellent).  David put them in the remaining shrubs and around the yard.  I am afraid it may also be a people repellent as our yard stinks to high heaven.

*Knock on wood* but we have not seen anymore snakes yet.  And after a careful study and research, David has come to the conclusion that the first small snake was a copperhead, and that the second was either a king snake or a racer of some type.  Poor non-poisonous snake.

Moebius Schmoebius

I learned to knit a moebius last week at our knitting group.  The cast on was not too bad – pretty fun.  You basically have this double loop cast on going to make the moebius be a moebius.  Trying to count the stitches after I cast on.  Not fun.  Trying to knit around the first time without losing stitches – not fun either.  I think I must have started over 10 times.  But I guess that's good, because I have a much better understanding of what I was doing – except I still don't quite understand how that twist got in there.  I feel quite proud to have accomplished it though.

My lace pattern in the cowl is not quite perfect either, but given the trouble I had at the beginning, I think it is only appropriate.

May 3rd was Davey’s Half-Birthday

I am a little behind on posting so I am going to get caught up.

May 3rd – Davey turned 18 months old!  We got him some mini-cupcakes (his daddy's favorite kind – not the mini-part – but the yellow cake with crisco/powdered sugar icing.  Actually it might have been buttercream but it's sweeeeeet and he loves it!)  Davey enjoyed them.  He made a bit of a mess as might be expected.

The photo below is an exercise in foreshortening!  I am not sure what he is pointing at, but I liked this picture a lot!
