Thursday

Davey and I went to the waterpark today.  It was jam packed, but we found a nice grassy shady area for our picnic.  I’m still not convinced it is ever hot enough here for waterparks (or I should say hot enough for me.  I’m kind of a wimp).  I mean, we do really enjoy it there.  The sun does feel really hot, but as soon as I get wet, I am just freezing.  Again, it’s still early, by August, I will likely be singing a different tune.  Davey, on the other hand, goes down the slide over and over and over and has a great time.

Davey and I just finished making chocolate chip cookies.  I call it our low altitude recipe with high altitude consequences.  When I followed the high altitude instructions, they didn’t like the cookies nearly as much.  They like the flat chewy result of high altitude prepared according to sea level instructions.  Me too actually.

And a short Davey story. Davey brings me superheroes and asks me if they are good guys or bad guys.  If I guess wrong, which is often, he says, “But Mommy – Look at his/her face.  Is he angry?  Does he have an angry face????”

And that’s all.  I am being summoned upstairs to help with the Davey nighttime rituals.  David just gave him a bath.  I must now appear with his small cup of milk and his toothbrush!

Winkie the Wig Head

Today I bought a wig head.  I am going to use it to block some of the hats that I knit.

Davey was very interested in the wig head, and he wanted to play with it.  I thought why not.  I’m all about encouraging creativity.  Turns out, I’ve been given the opportunity to blog about a wig head.  I never would have imagined that I’d blog about a wig head.  I never really would have anticipated even owning one.

Davey immediately named the wig head Winkie and began to surround her with all sorts of objects.  (It would become an installation piece of sorts.)

There’s just something abit odd about this sight.

But Davey was so engaged and was having so much fun.  He talked to Winkie.  I think that actually, he was getting things gathered so that they could go on a trip.  There was mention of Nanny and Texarkana.

And here he added his finishing touches – a red ribbon for Winkie’s neck.

Here’s the happy kid.

evening walk

In the evening, we like to go for a short stroll before Davey’s bedtime.  It’s a nice way for him to calm down and unwind.

You know – like this:

and this:

David and I had a different idea of what the proper attire should be to be out this evening.  Davey and I had on pants and long-sleeved t-shirts.  David went with another look.  “It’s summer!” he said.  He did get a little chilly towards the end of our walk.

Half of our walk is down our sidewalk along our street and the other half is on a paved trail on the edge of the open space behind our neighborhood.  We call it a nature walk, although I don’t know much about the plant life.

Except for dandelions.  We have gigantic dandelions.  Davey loves to pick them.

And he picks us little flowers.

Here’s a blurry picture of Davey giving me a flower.  Why is it blurry?  There was a big fingerprint or smear on my lens.  Lovely.

At this point, Davey was chasing down Galactus or some guy like that.

On the move.

He briefly lost a shoe.

And finally, he walked with David.

happy family father’s day

A fun father’s day weekend.

We took David to Benihana’s last night.  It’s just about David’s favorite place to eat, and Davey had never been.  I can’t remember the last time that David and I went.  A long time ago.  It was a lot of fun.  Davey got a big kick out of the chef.

Davey and I made David a cake.

This morning, Davey had a gift for David.

It was a superhero.  Hawkman.

Davey and I went to the comic book shop to pick it out the other day.  Davey did great not telling Daddy about it.  He was so excited.

We hung out this morning.

David started teaching Davey how to play checkers.

David arranged for Davey to win quite handily which he enjoyed.  But Davey said that “checkers are kinda boring Daddy”.

We took David to the Carolyn Holmberg Preserve, where Davey and I had had our chilly picnic a few weeks ago.   It was a little chilly again!  It clouded up and the wind was blowing so our picnic was a little cool.  But then we went walking on a great trail out there.  Davey started running, and he warmed right up.

We’d barely started and David already had rocks in his shoes.  So he stopped to empty out his shoe.   Davey has gone into a big of a ornery phase, so he kept trying to add more rocks to David’s shoe as he was trying to remove them.

And then he started running.

And then he ran back to me.

And then he let me give him a good hug.

He ran with David.

but he finally started to get tired.

and we headed home.

Girasole, Starfish and Karate

I have been going great on my Girasole.  Until…

Ugh.

I was starting Chart C.  I had 260 stitches on my needles.  Oh no – nope… I had 263.  I had a feeling that the mistake happened two rounds back or about 750 stitches back. I am not too good at ripping out in the round.  I lose my place.  I’ve been thinking about how I can avoid that.  Thinking a simple safety pin maybe to mark a spot.

My other option of tinking back 750 stitches did not appeal to me either. So since it didn’t take me that long to get this point – I just ripped it all out.  I’ve already made some headway again.  I think I am going to have to have my cone of silence again.  At least for awhile.

I was a little disgusted so I put the girasole away and knitted this dishcloth.  I saw the pattern and was curious to see how the wedges would all come together.  It was really fun and a fast knit too!

And finally,  Davey is starting karate at the Little Gym this fall, and he is very excited.  Very.  “Mommy, I already know a lot about karate”, he tells me.

Then he demonstrates.

There’s a lot of “Hi Ya!!!” action too.

And lots of spinning around and crazy kicking.

That picture was kinda blurry – boy in action!

Champ Camp

Yesterday Davey started a 6 week camp.  They’ll meet weekly and learn the basics of three different sports: soccer, tball/baseball, and basketball.  (I’m thinking the basketball portion of the camp is going to be a hoot.)

Twenty 3 and 4 year olds participated in this camp.  There was a coach for every 3-4 kids.  It was the greatest thing.  There is nothing like seeing twenty 3 and 4 year olds all in a big group.  It’s like puppy joy.

They stretched.

They lined up in their groups, and they held hands as they walked to the area where they were going to practice.

I love watching them walk in their little groups.

He loved kicking the ball.

Oh and look at his focus!

Every once in awhile they’d all just fall down giggling.

At the end of camp, they all got in a big circle again.  Then the coach would throw the ball toward one of the kids and they were supposed to kick it.

This was fun, but then the ball got away, and that was even more fun.  I wish I’d taken a better picture of the circle of kids disappearing as 20  kids went running after that ball.

After we were finished, I wanted to take a picture for David.

“Davey, smile!  I want to take a picture for Daddy!”

Thank goodness that reverse psychology still works on him sometimes.

“Davey.  That’s great!  Daddy will love to see the back of your head!”

Immediate spinning child and this:

(And yes, his name is spelled wrong.  The poor girl was being swarmed by 20 kids needing name tags, and I didn’t have the heart to ask her for another.)

“Great Scott!”

Yesterday, Davey decided that we all needed new names.  He told David that he was Sasquatch.  I was known as Electra, and Davey was Incredible Hulk.  Davey called us Sasquatch and Electra for most of the day.

“Mo — Electra, are you…?”

“I love you Sasquatch.”

It was pretty fun.

Today David and Davey strolled over to what they call the “fancy” playground while I was at school.  David ran while pushing the stroller on the way back, so they played superhero games which involved everything along the path being some type of monster.

“Davey!  There’s a rabbit monster!”

The rabbit monster hopped away.

Davey said, “Great Scott!  He deflected my heat beam!”

Davey and Lulu

Yesterday Davey went to a birthday party. His friend Lulu had turned 4.

There was a bounce castle, where he spent a good part of the afternoon.

There was a piñata.

Cupcakes!

He enjoyed watching Lulu open some of her presents.  He was very excited for her to open the gift that he had gotten her.

He tried out the slip and slide, but it was just a little too chilly for him.

But what he enjoyed the mostest was playing with his friend Lulu.

At one point, Lulu announced that Davey had kissed her and that he was now her boyfriend.  (If you are wondering, as I was, there was apparently a carefully placed kiss on Lulu’s forehead.)

Hodge Podge

Yesterday I learned to do a circular cast on –  The Emily Ocker Cast on to be more specific.  It involved a crochet hook.  I figured it out by watching a couple of videos and then referring to the photos from the link above.   Apparently I needed several types of demonstrations in order to learn this.  It was tricky at first, and then when I got it – I got it!  I love that feeling, and after that, it was easy as pie.  I am starting a circular shawl.  Girasole by Jared Flood to be specific.  So far so fun!

Let’s see what else.  Davey continues to remind us at least once daily that “Davey is a little boy name, and when he gets big he wants to be called ‘Thor'”.  I suggested David.  Nope.

Today we were walking on a sidewalk toward a building, and Davey said, “I smell elephants”.  Apparently, someone had just put some fertilizer down.

I don’t know why he continues to ask me superhero questions.  I either get it wrong, or I get it wrong.  And the rest of the time, I just don’t know.  And even when I do know, I still get it wrong.  “Mommy.  Can Captain America fly?”  I say yes.  “No Mommy!”

“Is Boomerang a good guy?” 50 -50 shot here for me.  “Yes”, I say.  “No Mommy!”  (And I am not sure as I write this which he is.  I am no good on 50 50 odds, and I tend to forget quickly.)

It doesn’t matter if Davey already knows the answer.  He still wants to ask the question.  So I try to answer incorrectly to play with him.  I still manage to mess that up half the time.

It’s all very confusing.

I am working on the superheroes and supervillains working together.  I encourage them to hug and stuff.  I also encouraged Davey to learn all their super abilities and such so that later when he gets older, then they can do battle.  That works a little.  The bad guys are not bad.  They are just silly!  At least, I keep trying to tell him that.  He still wants to make them battle, although I think they all went camping today.  Apparently, Dr Doom was nice when he went camping.

So that’s our lives of superheroes and more superheroes.

David got a Roger Federer hat today.  A friend  brought it back from Switzerland.  It may be one of David’s favorite things he has ever received in his entire life.  He was very excited.  I need to take a picture of it perched on his head.

The other night I made this: Cindy’s Jambalaya.  I have made it several times.  I highly recommend it.  I used turkey smoked sausage, and I thought it worked great.

Tonight we are making homemade pizza.  Davey is getting ready to help me.  Better get to it!

Chalk? Dinosaur Dig!

Saturday we went to the Denver Chalk Art Festival.  When I think of chalk being used outdoors, I think of sidewalk chalk.  I think of the chalk that I have watched my nieces and Davey using.

I didn’t expect results such as these:

I wish I could have seen the wolf on Sunday after the piece was completed.

This one went on to win first place I think.

These artists were using pastels – I guess technically a type of chalk?  They were using jillions of colors and  they were beautiful.  And to think how temporary these pieces are.

There were many many artists, and David and I enjoyed looking at all of their work.

What about Davey?  Well, the art was ok, but he enjoyed his “dinosaur dig”.

We had forgotten our sunscreen and soon found that we were going to cook without it, so Davey and I waited at this sidewalk construction area, while David ran back to get the sunscreen.

Davey was determined to find David a t-rex bone.

“Mommy, T-Rex bones are Daddy’s favorite!”

He found a nice rock which he identified as a t-rex bone.

Gravel and rocks and the potential for a paleontological find.  That’s what it is all about!
