Moebius Schmoebius

I learned to knit a moebius last week at our knitting group.  The cast on was not too bad – pretty fun.  You basically have this double loop cast on going to make the moebius be a moebius.  Trying to count the stitches after I cast on.  Not fun.  Trying to knit around the first time without losing stitches – not fun either.  I think I must have started over 10 times.  But I guess that's good, because I have a much better understanding of what I was doing – except I still don't quite understand how that twist got in there.  I feel quite proud to have accomplished it though.

My lace pattern in the cowl is not quite perfect either, but given the trouble I had at the beginning, I think it is only appropriate.

May 3rd was Davey’s Half-Birthday

I am a little behind on posting so I am going to get caught up.

May 3rd – Davey turned 18 months old!  We got him some mini-cupcakes (his daddy's favorite kind – not the mini-part – but the yellow cake with crisco/powdered sugar icing.  Actually it might have been buttercream but it's sweeeeeet and he loves it!)  Davey enjoyed them.  He made a bit of a mess as might be expected.

The photo below is an exercise in foreshortening!  I am not sure what he is pointing at, but I liked this picture a lot!

Bubbbllezzzzzzz!

Davey loves bubbles.  Last summer, he was a little young to get too excited about them, but I'd bought this great great bubble blowing thing from Cracker Barrel.  It got left out in the rain and ruined so I got a new one at Walgreens.  Well this was a tiger or something and you pushed on his tummy or something, I can't remember for sure.  I only remember that it was a piece of junk and did not work.

So I went the old fashioned route.  Big bottle of bubbles with a wand with three holes at one end.  That really wasn't getting the job done either.  I'd have to try a few times to get several bubbles going and by that point he was chasing a rock on the ground or throwing pine cones.  It seemed like he was yelling bubbles again just as a big bunch of them burst behind him.

So today I went back to cracker barrel and did we get a bubble blowing apparatus.  It's awesome.  It blows (with the aid of a battery operated fan thing) tons of bubbles.  All those bubbles – I can only describe it by saying it looked like magic.

Davey loved it.  David took some pictures:

He loved playing with the bubbles on this day before he turns one and a half.  18 months. Sweet boy.

Antsa Bitesa! and Birds Birds Birds!

Poor Davey got into the ants the other day.  He got several little bites on his hands and feet.   He refers to them as his Antsa Bitesa.  It has a little Italian flare to it!  His bites are healing up quickly though thank goodness.  I ask him does he have any ows?  He looks at his hands very carefully.

Every week I tape CBS Sunday morning with Charles Osgood.  It is the best show on TV.  I don't always get a chance to watch it in the morning, so I always tape it.   At the end of the show, they often do a short segment where you see some scenes of nature.  For example, this last Sunday, they'd filmed in a bayou near Baton Rouge.  There is no talking or music, just the sounds of nature. There were some beautiful white birds – maybe cranes?  Then they show this sleepy looking alligator.  He is almost completely submerged and he raises one lazy eye to look toward the camera.

So Davey saw the end of the show with us.  He has gone bananas for that 90 second nature segment.  Since Sunday, it happens at least once a day where Davey will start saying "birds birds birds!"  over and over, and then "hippo hippo"!   (When he says bird, it sounds more like bud with just a little r in it.  Hippo is more like "ippo")  He gets very excited and becomes adamant that we play it immediately.  He wants to watch it anywhere from 10-20 times.  He loves it!  I love that he loves it because it's one of my favorite parts of the show also. He loves watching the birds and that "hippo".  The hippo is of course an alligator.  Most times he argues with me and says that no it is a hippo. He sometimes will agree that it is an alligator, and other times he insists it is a hippo.  But I can understands his confusion.  It does look like how a hippo raises his head out of the water.  It is not doing much good at this point to explain that there are no wild hippos in Louisiana.

Oh and I did bake a cake for Oma's birthday the other day.  Nothing fancy – a cake mix with chocolate icing.  Not even homeade much less a torte!  But it's good.

And finally, I took some pictures of Davey yesterday.  I need to put some new ones up on flickr.  Here are a few that I liked though.  The light wasn't great, but I got some when we were playing and then when he was getting ready to take a nap.  (The nap didn't happen as he'd slept until about 8:30 that morning, instead of 7, and it threw him off.) It's very rare for him to resist a nap though, so it was fine.  We had fun taking pictures anyway!

Happy Birthday Oma!

April 27th is Oma's birthday.  David, Davey and I couldn't go home to celebrate, but we are thinking of her here.  Maybe I should bake a cake to celebrate.  I bet that David and Davey will think that is a great idea! 🙂

My aunt Liz had a great birthday celebration for Oma today.  The cake was beautiful!  She received several plants and flowers for her birthday.  Here is why – well besides the fact that she loves them:

Oma has the greenest thumb in the world.  Not to make this post about me, but just as a comparison (a vast huge comparison).  When I went to buy tomato plants a few weeks ago, there was a lady standing near me also looking at tomato plants.  I didn't know which type to buy, so I asked the lady which types were "dummy proof".  Oma has never had to buy dummy proof plants! (Quite an understatement – she can turn a brown plant green.)

Hope you have a wonderful birthday Oma!

Davey and the pantry

Davey likes to head to the pantry to play.  He pulls down the cans, boxes of jello, etc., and has fun playing on the floor of the pantry.

However, you never know what is going to strike his fancy.  One morning, I was still asleep, but David was up getting Davey's breakfast.  David said he looked up, and here came Davey out of the pantry with crumbs on his face holding an open bag of Lay's potato chips.  (This was a little troubling as we don't typically let him eat chips especially without supervision as those sharp little things tend to get stuck in his throat.)

Another time (as the pictures below will illustrate) we found him seated on the floor eating bread.  Most recently, he came out of the pantry munching on a soft corn tortilla.  And that's a little something about Davey and the pantry.

Daddy are you????? and Christina decides never to rake again.

Davey is starting to put words together.  When he wants to know where we are, or if he thinks we should be home but we are not yet, he says, "Daddy are you??"  Or "Mommy are you??"  (Quite the little budding philosopher.)

He says "Daddy home".  "Mommy Up".  "Mommy Sleep".  Of course, "No Daddy no!" 🙂

Onto a more traumatizing note.  (Not involving Davey at all.)  I was raking this afternoon.  Davey was playing on the backporch.  Part of our backyard is a big hill covered with rocks.  The rocks and crevices between are currently filled with leaves and pine needles.  So we are trying to get them raked out.  I had high hopes of getting this done before it warmed up, but it was not to be.  David has been so busy that we have pretty much resigned ourselves to beginning all projects house-related after the semester is over.

So I was raking away, and suddenly I raked up a snake.  I about came out of my shoes.  I dropped the rake (I think.  I have not been back to check.), and I ran screaming (pretty sure I was yelling pretty loud) back to the backporch.  Unfortunately I was not that far from the backporch to start out with, so it didn't really ease my mind to reach the porch.  Davey was not looking worried, so maybe I yelled loudly in my mind and not so much in my outside voice.

I admit, it was a very small snake.  Skinny and maybe 7 inches long.  I don't care.  I am scared to death of snakes.  It is irrational.  Thanks to many seasons of Survivor I can now look at pretty ones on tv without turning the channel.  I still am no good in real life meetings.

So I am now done raking until it freezes again.

Thisssssssss Much!!!!!

Lately, David and I will say to Davey:  "How much do we love you?"  And then we spread out our arms, or arms and legs (as we get increasingly silly) as far out as we can.  It becomes quite a good stretch!  And we say "THISSSSSSS MUCCCCHHHH!!!!!"

Davey grins and laughs.  He loves it.  So today he went up to David and gave him a big two-armed hug and said to him:  "THIISSSSSS MUCHHH!!!"

Oh that was sweet.

Muddy Water

This morning Davey and I went to Feaster Trail.  There is a nice area in front of the hospital where he likes to run around and play.  It was a little chilly outside, but pretty nice overall, and even if it was, how come the chilly air never seems to phase him?

He found piles of mud.  I think they were little mole mounds.  He stomped on them.  Then he found a nice stick (about 12 inches long) and started poking at the mud.  Then he found a mini-lake – well it was much bigger than a puddle but not deep.  Just perfect for stomping around in.)  So he stomped around in the mini-lake for awhile.  He poked the water with his stick.  He threw the stick in the water and retrieved it.  Several times.  Finally I started feeling rather irresponsible, as it was still chilly, and so I took his wet self and we left.  He was not too happy, and when I took his socks and shoes off, his little feet were toasty.

I neglected to bring my camera, so I could only get a couple of pictures of the aftermath.  I like his sweet little feet and shoes.

This afternoon after his nap, we are off to get a haircut.  The hair on the top of his head is about 4 inches long.  Well at least 3!

Easter Sunday

A couple of days late – but I wanted to post a few pictures from Easter Sunday.  It poured for most of the day, but we went to church.  The service was very nice and the music was great.  Davey had a great time in the nursery.  Apparently, he plays and plays and talks and talks.

After church, we took him home for a nap. He slept well and then we went to Little Rock to Lisa and Will’s.  They had a great lunch for us.  Two words:  Grape Salad!

They have baby bunnies, and Davey loved seeing them.  He got a little overzealous when he first saw one of the bunnies, and I was worried the bunny would not survive Davey’s grasp.  Davey charged over to the bunny and tried to grab him by the neck with both hands.  It kind of looked like he was going to strangle him.  (In overzealous love, not on purpose! :))  But the bunny made it, and Davey enjoyed looking at them and watching them hop around.

Hannah has a karaoke machine.  Davey picked up the microphone and started to sing right into it.  I have no idea where he learned out to do this.  Ok, I guess I might have an inkling.  He’s watched a little American Idol with us on Tuesday nights.  I guess that’s where?

He had a good time singing though.  Only he knows the lyrics.
