Some Knitting and the Berry Patch

I found the cutest little keychain the other day.  It’s a miniature sock blocker.  You knit a sock to go on it.  I can’t wait to do this.

Just the coolest!

I’m also moving along on my Girasole blanket.  It’s growing.  I am going to post a picture, but it’s just going to look like a Girasole blob.  However, it’s progress.

So that’s a little knitting.  Lately, I’ve been taping old Frasier episodes and  watching them while I knit.  One of my favorite shows.  I also found all of the Andy Griffith episodes on netflix instant viewing – that’s my very favorite!

Davey and I went back to the Berry Patch farm today.  We picked black raspberries and red currants.  I forgot to take a picture of the red currants before I started turning them into jelly.

Berry picking always seems like such a sweet frolic.   I never fail to romanticize the whole process.  In my mind, the berries jump into my basket.   I am now making a point to remind myself for once and for all.  This is not true.  Today there were mosquitoes  (We sprayed but they were around).  The raspberry bushes were very thorny.  The black ripe raspberries were hiding in the center of the bushes.  My arms can tell the tale of my struggle to get to them.  The Berry Patch website had recommended wearing long sleeves.  It wasn’t that hot, but I really didn’t feel like long sleeves. I should have worn them.  Next time I will (next time?!?).

Davey was ready to go pretty much after I picked the first few black raspberries.  He got over the romance very quickly.  I managed to pick a few pints though.

I didn’t pick a ton.  I needed David there picking with me.

We picked about 2 pints of red currants as well.  Those little boogers are not easy picking.

I picked enough to make three little 1/2 pints of jelly.  It’s tasty though and has me wanting to head back for more.

I just can’t stay away.  Soon we can return for strawberries.

Movie, Splashin’, Hockey and Casa Bonita!

Saturday was a big day.

Davey was smiling about it.  He told me that he was using his hands to help him even smile bigger because he was just so excited!

He was so excited because we were on our way to see his first movie ever in the theatre.

I even took a picture of the drive there.

We saw Winnie the Pooh.  It was a perfect first movie.  The length was just right at just over an hour.  Although he really enjoyed it, by the time an hour went by, he was just about ready to go.

He loved the big chair.  He loved the popcorn, candy and lemonade.  Actually, he loved the idea of the snacks more then he actually enjoyed consuming them.  He was too excited.  David and I were too.  It was the first movie we’d been to in probably over a year.  And it was such a cute movie!  Perfect for Davey.

Some of the previews were a little loud for him and he put his hands over his ears.  He also spent most of the movie first in my lap and then in David’s.  He wasn’t scared of the movie, maybe it was the dark theatre that propelled him to our laps.  We didn’t mind.

After the movie, we walked around the outdoor shopping area and we found a splash park.  It was a great one.  Davey loved it.  We took turns maneuvering him through the fountains.

He also ventured in on his own.

And had a great time.

After the splash park, we walked around a little more.

Oh, but I have to mention the “ninja tinkle”.  Davey loves finding secret places to “tinkle”.  And he tends to wait until he really really has to go go, so we often don’t have much time.  So here they went on the hunt for the perfect spot.   Oh to be a boy (although we may be ticketed at some point if we are not careful)!

There is an ice center in the same area (this is in Westminster), and we all watched our first hockey practice.  That was really fun.  Davey didn’t want to leave.

And then we got a call from a friend.  Did we want to meet at Casa Bonita?  Heck yeah, we love to go to Casa Bonita.  So we stopped by Target for a change of clothes (we weren’t anticipating a splash park followed by Casa Bonita).

And the matching Davids led the way.

Davey got to sit with 4 or so little girls who were between 5 and 8 I think.  They took good care of him, and he was just thrilled to be part of their group.  He is so social.  He told me last night that he wished all the kids in the world could be his age.   He loves friends!

So it was a big day.  A fun fun day.

Saturday morning stuff

Saturday morning.

I think we are going to take Davey to see his very first movie ever today:  Winnie the Pooh.

The first three postcards we mailed via postcrossing.com have been received.  So we are getting three more ready to go this morning.   I think I am having as much or more fun than Davey with this, although I know he will love receiving the postcards.  He loves all things mail.

Speaking of which he got a card from his Uncle Michael and Aunt Holly yesterday.  It had a picture of a cat dressed up as Wonder Woman on the front.  He loves that card.  He took it to bed last night.  He keeps telling us how “handsome” the cat is.

Davey does not like laugh tracks.   He watches Disney Jr in the morning sometimes, so when we turn on the tv later in the day it will be on the “big kid” shows.  As soon as he sees that one of these shows are on, he says, “Quick turn it!  I don’t like that laughing!”   It’s funny, I don’t even hear the laugh track anymore, but he’s got a great point.  Do we really need to be guided as when to laugh?  He doesn’t think so.

Ok he was actually just in a time out.  I gotta go get him.   He just threw a rather large fit because he wanted another episode of Spiderman, and he’d watched plenty this morning.   As I carried him up the stairs he was apologizing while attempting to slug me at the same time.  A confused 3 year old with a bit of a hot temper.   It’s all ok now though.  Time outs are great for him.  He gets into bed and looks at a book and calms right down.

Target often has great little workbooks and game books in their $1.00 section.  We are going to go do some connect the dots and learn about dinosaurs.

Happy Saturday!

Honey of a Morning

I was making my bowl of cereal this morning and thinking about coming downstairs to write my blog.   Davey was eating his cereal and watching Agent Oso.

As I was fixing my cereal, I noticed a puddle on the counter next to the stove.  It looked kinda golden and thick.  Honey.  The other day I’d put a jar of honey in the cabinet right above.  Sure enough, when I opened it there was the jar on its side, and the entire shelf was almost covered in honey  (Someone had not screwed the lid on correctly.  (Someone = me.)).

Ugh.  Honey is not easy to clean up.   However, I’ve learned that a bowl of really hot water and a rag works ok.

Ok  now that that’s cleaned up, I can write my blog (although I worry that I will find remnants of stickiness forever – more likely David will).

We’ve got to leave for tumblin’ in a little bit.  Koko’s outside for the moment.  She’s doing better I think.  She can kinda tumble/stumble down the stairs now.  She Hates to be picked up and brought down the stairs.  She about panics.  So I try to guide her the best I can.

So yesterday we took Davey to tadpoles and I got a few pictures.

Here he was working on his beginning stroke.  What form!

They look a little unsure here.

This week at the end of class, they have been swinging on a rope into the water.

Davey does great.  He’s never really on his own on the rope, but still, I am proud of how much more comfortable he is in the water.

He had an extra good day, because I think the teacher forgot to take him underwater.  They usually do it at the beginning of class, and he still doesn’t like it much.

We’ve gotten into a habit of stopping at McDonald’s on the way home.  Davey has been trying to get all the Clone War Star Wars guys, and I think he has them now.

David and Davey played a little too.  Davey looks like he knows what he is doing here.

He has no idea, but he has fun anyway.

Ok time to get going!

Wednesday Water

I’ve not posted since Saturday.  Yikes!  It’s been a busy time for us.  It’s the end of our semester for one thing.  Then a bigger thing was that our Koko puff got sick again.  Her vestibular head tilt vertigo spinny problem has recurred.  Poor girl.  We took her to the vet yesterday.  Turns out she also has an ulcer on her cornea which apparently is very painful.  Why are dogs so darn stoic?  I wish she’d howl so I’d know she was hurting.

So we are working on getting her better.  The vet called today with a report on Koko’s bloodwork.  She said that she hoped her bloodwork looked that great when she became an elderly lady like 15 year old Koko.  So that was some good news at least.

Koko’s coat is in not the best shape maybe due to age or possibly something going on with her endocrine system.  So Davey and I gave her a bath with special medicated soap  yesterday.  Davey was very sweet helping me and talked to Koko about her “precious fur”.

Today Davey and I spent a little time outside.   I fashioned a small water play area for Davey.  I got out his disk sled, a couple of buckets, bathtub toys, and he was set.   He also came up with a bead necklace and “Two-Face” the super villain.  Then he was really set!

He gets so focused on the story he is making up.  If he notices me watching him, he gives me a great smile and says, “Mommy, I’m pretending!” indicating that I need to not pay attention to what he is doing.

He’s really getting into it here.

Unfortunately a storm was brewing and I soon had to get him inside.  Here’s where I told him that I’d heard thunder.

And a smile.

Saturday in Review

It’s about time to get Davey to bed.  He’s had a fun day.  He ended up spending most of the morning playing with the little girls across the street.

I did go to the grocery store, but I did not go to the library or post office.  Oh well, they’ll be there tomorrow and Monday.

I did buy postcards.  I learned about a website called Postcrossing.  You ask for an address and then you mail a postcard to that address.  Once you’ve mailed out a few and they have been received, then you can also receive postcards yourself.  You can start out sending 5 of them.  I thought Davey might really enjoy getting postcards from people from all over the world.

I got postcards ready to go to China, Russia, Germany, England and Texas today  (I guess I checked the box that we’d do domestic cards as well).  The website has been around for about 6 years.  They have rankings and one person has sent over 5,000 postcards!  Davey and I will make a bulletin board or something.  We won’t get too crazy with it.  It should be fun though!

This afternoon, Davey and David (mostly David) drew a Legion Of Doom city and whatever the superhero one is called.  Hall of Justice?

You can kinda see what’s going on here.  They drew dune buggies, and buildings, and cars and boats and airplanes.

Davey enjoyed this.

I wish I would have gotten a close-up of his shirt.  I just got him that shirt.  Why did I buy white?  Not sure what I was thinking except I knew he’d like the lightning bolts.  It now bears evidence of every single thing he touched today.  Peanut butter, grape jelly, strawberries, juice, popsicles, just to name a few.

They finally got hot and went inside.

I stayed outside and did some knitting.

It was hot but not so bad under the shade of the backyard trees (and basketball hoop).

Kokopuff hung out with me although she gets nervous as soon as she senses the camera pointing at her.

And now Davey is in the bath.  Time to read stories and sing songs.

Saturday Morning & High Altitude Popovers

It’s Saturday morning and we are hanging out.  Actually, David went to run, Davey is playing his Hero Up game on the computer, and I am transferring all of our bills to our new bank.  Not my idea of fun, but I am done now.

I am hoping that we do a whole lot of not much today.  Although, I need to go to the grocery store, and the library and the post office.  After that, hopefully not much.

I’ve been researching the making of popovers at high altitude.  They are a fun bread to have with dinner sometimes.  In Arkansas, they rose up in the oven and made beautiful tall popovers.  Here, they resemble a flat muffin with a small hole in the middle.

I’d been using this popover recipe from Allrecipes.  It’s a really good recipe.  Even kinda flat, they tasted pretty good.

But today, I learned this- High Altitude Popovers.  It’s a very detailed explanation of how to make popovers at high altitude, but there is a summary of the recipe at the end which seems straightforward.

If you love popovers or if you’ve never tried them, the allrecipes recipe is very easy and they are fun to make.  If you live at high altitude though, I’ll let you know how this other recipe goes!

Just thought I’d share.

Ok time to go hangout.

Goofy Photo Day

We’ve had these big rumbling rumbling thunderstorms the last few nights.  They’ve been great (except for the flash flooding part in parts of town).  The noise has been amazing.  I love a good thunderstorm.

The other afternoon we went to the playground although a storm was brewing.  We ended up having plenty of time though before it came through.

Davey wanted his goldfish snack right when we got there.  I don’t know what possesses him to put as many goldfish in his mouth as possible.  It may be inherited trait.  He is closely related to someone who does the same thing with popcorn.  I’m not naming any names.

He was bouncing around playing here.  I’m not sure what exactly he was doing, but I liked the shot.

He was telling me yesterday about who is “in his heart”.

“Mommy, you and Daddy are in my heart”.

“Ashley (our 5 year old neighbor) – she faded into my heart.”  (I love the words he chooses).

Then I guess we were getting too gooshy so he got silly with it.  “Mommy!  Trees and bushes are in my heart!”

I haven’t blogged much about knitting lately.  I have been knitting, although not as much as I’d like to.  I am not finishing much though.  I am jumping around from project to project.  I did finish another hat, which I need to mail to a friend.

I’m also working on something that I think is really very cool.  I am test knitting a few projects for an upcoming knitting book that a friend of mine is co-authoring.   This is really neat.  Yarn magically appears at my doorstep, and then I just start knitting it up.  I’ll look forward to sharing pictures of these projects once the book is out!

And a final photo of Davey.  I’ve gone with mostly goofy photos of Davey today, but I like his expression in this one.

Winkie…the baby bunny

There are baby bunnies under our deck.  Every once in awhile they venture out into the backyard.  But then yesterday afternoon we went outside to the front porch to check out the thunderstorm which was brewing.

As we sat down on the front steps, we saw a baby bunny just a few feet from us.  Silly bunnies have very little fear.

As you can see, Davey and I decided to put out a couple of carrots for the bunny (Davey of course immediately named the bunny Winkie).

Apparently, the bunny was not acquainted with carrots.  I tried to tell Davey that he would sniff out them out and recognize them as bunny food, but Winkie seemed to prefer the blades of grass.

Davey told David,  “Daddy, he can mow for us!”

I think Davey might have been trying to convince the bunny to try the carrots here.

We got excited for a moment when the bunny appeared to be moving toward the carrot.

But he just hopped right on past them.

We figure he went home and described the carrots to his mama, and his mama explained to him that he had missed quite a treat.

After the bunny left, I took a few pictures of Davey making silly faces.

Then he demonstrated Superman flying.

Then he decided that he wanted David to come back outside with us, so he went and rang the doorbell.  Many times.

Davey was quite happy when Daddy came to the door.

Soon after that, the rain began coming down in buckets, and we went inside.   Perhaps we will be able to convince the baby bunnies to try the carrots on another day.

Independence Day (and he danced and danced and danced)

On Monday we walked over to our community festival to celebrate the 4th.

Davey immediately got in line to bounce in the bouncy houses.  He’d spent the day discussing how he wanted to ride the donkeys, but as soon as we got there, he forgot about that and went straight for the bouncy houses.

And he had such fun scrambling over this bouncy mountain.

Then despite the fact that he could do this every day of the week, he decided to play on the playground.  I think he enjoyed the jillions of kids there.  It looks like I dressed him to match the playground equipment.

Oh and there were cupcakes!  And like his daddy, he likes the icing best.  He gave David the cake part I think.

But the highlight of the evening  was his dancing.  There was a group playing called Funkiphino.  They were a lot of fun.  We’re going to have to go see them again as it turns out that Davey is a disco/funk loving kid.  He positioned himself at the front of the stage, and then he danced.

and he danced and danced and danced.   He was a blur.   (He also danced with the little girl in the black dress next to him.  He kept trying to strike up a conversation amidst their dancing.)

He even incorporated numerous somersaults into his dance.

It was one of my favorite moments ever – watching him dance.

We than walked back to the park by our house, and we all watched the fireworks. Davey sat by Uncle Michael.

He got a little sleepy.
