Oklahoma! OK!

We are heading out on a little trip to Oklahoma today.    It will be a busy time with lots of visiting.

So  I was contemplating starting my next project in the Joy of Sox on the drive home.  I haven’t gotten #2 done yet, so I was trying to decide if I was breaking my rules.  Then I thought – well they are my rules.  I am going in order and this is a special circumstance as I would like to put the driving time to good use, but I am limited as to what I can knit because I get carsick.    These socks are called Takeout for Two.  I have never knitted anything like these before, and I probably wouldn’t have if  I wasn’t knitting this book.  Which is why I like this project so much.  I probably wouldn’t have tried out the little fishies pattern either.

I am decreasing my heel now on my fishies sock and am getting ready to settle in to the foot.  I am hopeful that at least the first sock will be done by the time we get back home.

Davey is running around the house lamenting the fact that the little sticker he got from the nice lady at Walmart is torn.  “Mommy, my sticker is torn!”  So dramatic!  He is already very expressive.  He gets that from his Daddy. (no drama from his mama.)

Playdoh Baby, Heel Flap, Puzzle, and an Elizabethan Collar

Davey created a Playdoh Baby yesterday.  He carried him around and told us how much he loved him.  At some point, he divided the playdoh baby into twins.  Then they magically came back together.  Here is a photo of Playdoh Baby:  (David and I quietly said out of Davey’s hearing that Playdoh Baby kind of resembles an internal organ of some type.) You can see how much he is enjoying little “PB”:

I started the heel of my sock last night. I did the heel flap and finished turning the heel. Now it is time to pick up the stitches around the sides.

I love the two-color heel!  I don’t know why there is that wrinkle in the middle.  These photos make me nuts.

Two more things about the sock.  I described the cuff as having kind of ruffles.  Well my knitting friends at my knitting group last night helped poor rather blockheaded me.   My friend Karen said, “oh those are waves at the top”.    Hadn’t occurred to me despite the fact that I am knitting fishies in water.  Then I wondered, “Why is it called Two to Tango”?  My friend Lori suggested it is because I am using 2 colors.  Sounds reasonable and had also not occurred to me.

Davey and I went walking again this morning and ended at the thrift store.  Today we found some great German puzzles!   On one of them, you connect the mommy animal with her babies:

I love this little puzzle!

And finally – Poor Koko.  She has a wound on her elbow that is not healing well.  So, Elizabethan Collar.  Poor girl, I just hate to put it on her.  She doesn’t like it either.  She’s 14 and has enough challenges as it is being arthritic and almost deaf.  Now we had to put that collar on her.  Here’s hoping her elbow will heel (I have typed in heel like that 10 times.  I have heel flap on the brain.)

Tantalizing Tuesday Tango

Ok I really can’t tango much today with my sock – I need to get over the alliteration too. (that probably won’t happen though.  I enjoy it too much!)  I have got to finish my other projects.  I can’t wait to share them next week.  Well, if they don’t turn out to be hang off the body or floppy armed short waisted disasters.

I began the heel flap last night.  Cuff is done!  All I can see when I look at this picture is that vertical line running down the middle of the sock.  Small problem when going from needle to needle.  Oh well, it’ll block out.  (At least I will comfort myself with that for now.)

I think one reason that I love this sock so much is that those colors are just very soothing to me.  The blues remind me of the ocean.  It’s so darn hot here.   I have to stop talking about the heat though.  It is ONLY June 22.  We’ve got July, August, and part of September.   Oh but I just mentioned it today to explain one reason why this sock appeals to me so much.  (and the fishies are just too fun!)

Davey and I walked around town this morning.  We ended our walk at the thrift store.  We like to check there periodically for toys for him.  Last week we found a Wiggles Guitar.  Today we found a mega blocks Fire Truck.  1/2 price sale so it was $2.00!  He loves it.  He’s been pulling it around the house and filling it up since we got home.  Here you can see that playing can be serious business.

Here I got him to say “cheeeeeese”:

Finally, I wanted to share this blog – the Frugal Life Project .  I just discovered it a week or so.  She usually posts at least 2 times a day.   Things like sales at Old Navy, or a great sale on a park bench at Amazon the other day (with free shipping!).  Yesterday she put up a link to a Disney website.  You can set up a phone message for free where a Mickey Mouse character will call and leave a personalized message for your child.  I set it up to call this morning  for Davey.  At 9:00. Great planning on my part – we were out walking.  So we missed it – the answering machine didn’t get it. I will try again.  Anyway, she puts up coupons, recipes, all kinds of stuff.  I love it! (You can follow it on facebook and twitter as well.)

Two To Tango: Or “I Could Have Danced All Night”

Started Sock Pattern #2 in The Joy of Sox – “Two to Tango”.  I am totally addicted.  I did not want to put these down, but I am down to the wire now on my secret (gift) projects.  I really like fair isle, but I am pretty new to it.  I have never done it in a sock.  I have had tension problems when I tried it once with a mitten, so now I am really focusing on “keeping it loose and relaxed”.  This seems to be working.  I am using the technique where you have one color in your left hand and one in your right.  So I guess I am knitting Continental style from the left, and English from the right.  Talk about making a person feel like a real knitter!

First though, I knitted the cutest fun cuff.  It’s got a little ruffle to it.

And now – see the fishies?

This yarn is so soft and squishy too.  It’s the Knit Picks Stroll – Tonal.  It feels so nice and is awesome to knit with.  The colors are just right too.  I can’t wait to get back to it today!

Yesterday we had a nice Father’s Day.  Davey wanted an entire party.  We went to Walmart, and he wanted balloons, streamers, cups, decorations, and games.  We settled for a small cake, candle and singing “Happy Father’s Day to you”. This made him very happy – oh and David too!

And finally.  Yesterday David overheard Davey talking to our little Daisy girl.  She’s an older girl who we adopted a few years ago.  So Davey was sitting with her saying: “We love you sooooo much.  You are a precious girl.  You love wagging your tail and eating food and drinking water.”  Sweet boy.

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day in particular to my father and to David!

I still have a tendency to forget about Father’s Day applying to David.  I’m so dumb.  He loves being a daddy to Davey, but my brain knew him for so long before he was a father, I guess it just  forgets to make the connection sometimes.

Davey and I are going to get him a cake.  “Cupcakes Mommy, and a Cake – a Race car cake Mommy!” says Davey.

Have a great day!

Roll in the Hay Socks: Complete = Yay!

I finished them!  They turned out nice.  I wrote this before, but if I were to knit them again, I would definitely knit them on a smaller needle.  I used size 2.  I should have used  size 1.  But that’s just my gauge.  I am a kind of loose knitter I think.

So then I wanted to take pictures of them.  David has not yet gotten into photographing my knitted objects with any kind of creative flair, so I wanted to try to take the pictures myself.  I walked this morning and came home a sweaty mess.  I picked up my wool socks and went back into the 70% humidity and 90 degree temperature and sat in the grass to try to get a decent picture.  I tried holding up the camera in front of me and pointing at my feet.  I got silly results such as – Socks in the Wild:

I was having a hard time with the light.

I took a few pictures inside too.  Actually this was when I had David’s assistance – but he was not thrilled with the junk in the background (which I tried to crop out as best I could):

Ok so I am happy they are done!  Enough about them, and on to Two to Tango.  I keep looking forward through this sock book and there are just such a variety of sock patterns.  I get excited looking at them.   I am blocking out of my mind that there are “experienced” patterns which also call for Magic Loop which I have never done.  That’s for another day.

Abit about Davey.  He got a haircut today.  It’s very cute.  He went to the barber shop and he did just great.  Davey let the barber put the cape on him, and he held the lollipop, that David had bought him in advance, under his cape.  His hair was getting so long with cute little curls, but this will be much cooler.  It makes him look like a little boy though – which I know he is.

He played at the playground after that.  He didn’t seem too phased by the 70% humidity and 90 degree temps – well except for that little red face:

Just a little technical somethin’ somethin’

It’s naptime.  Not looking good.  Do we want to battle the heat at the waterpark?  Not sure I have it in me.  Think I’d rather stay where it is cool and try to finish this sock!  I had to order some yarn for my Two to Tango socks that I am starting next.  It arrived today.   I can’t wait to get started.

Also, I really like this artist and his blog.  I wanted to share his latest entry: http://woowork.blogspot.com/2010/06/business-by-book.html

Happy Friday afternoon!

Got a little ahead of myself: Knitting Disaster averted

I was all excited to photograph my finished Roll in the Hay socks this morning.  All that was left to do was to graft the toes.  I did that and wove in my ends.  I was looking at my sock and admiring how nicely I had woven in the ends, when I thought “hmmm”.  My sock looked a little short.  Sure enough, I’d left out an entire pattern repeat.  20 rows short.  So I had to take out the toe.  Undoing my nice kitchener stitch is not high on my list of favorite things to do, but I got it.  I had a bit of a mess as seen below:

Here is the top of my sock.  It lacks one repeat:

But I have order once again, and I am good to go to finish up this sock for real this time!

Davey woke up seriously volatile and grumpy this morning.  Sometimes he is so not a morning person.  He is so like me in that way.  I’d prefer not to talk for an hour or so after I wake up.  I had a nightshirt forever – finally had to throw it away – but it said it perfectly:  “I don’t do mornings”.   Davey is coming around though to his usual cheerful self.  He was playing catch with David a little while ago.  Davey preferred to head butt the ball each time though.  I think we have a little soccer player in the making!

He’s now playing with Daddy, and I am going to get on the treadmill.   Happy Friday!

Knit in Public Day

I am writing a little later in the day then usual.  This morning, I went to knit  with my friends from our knitting group.  It was a great time.  We all gathered in a restaurant  downtown.  It was a great morning and we knitted into the early afternoon.  I meant to bring my camera and take some pictures, but I completely forgot it.

David brought Davey up and they “strolled” around downtown.  It was getting too hot to do that for too long though.  They came back after abit and had lunch with me.  And then I knitted some more!  Knitting all morning with friends – with a visit from the Davids – I couldn’t ask for much more than that!

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on my first pair of socks from Joy of Sox!  I am approaching the toe on sock number 2.   Yay!   It’s funny that when I started this sock, I needed a quiet room and total concentration.  And now, I am knitting on it while I watch tv.  Maybe not always the best idea as I did have to un-knit (tink) a few times, but there were no major repairs required.  I am looking forward to posting a picture of the completed socks!

We just got back from the waterpark.  It’s just about too hot to even go to the waterpark.   We laughed when everyone told us that last summer was a “mild” summer.  Turns out they weren’t kidding!

Yesterday, Davey discovered the sprinklers.  He played and played and played in our driveway.  He absolutely loved them. Here are some pictures. (David took the pictures.  We just let Davey strip down and play.  So after David was done, I asked him about taking the photos, and he said he took lots of good “Elvis” shots.  I didn’t know what that meant, so he explained, “from the waist up”.  I just thought that was pretty funny!

Library Day

We are off to Hot Springs in a little while to go to the library.  It is time for a new stack for Davey.  We’ve had Yo Yes by Chris Raschka this time around.  A simple but great book.  I particularly like it because it brings back memories of reading it to Mikayla when I guess she was around Davey’s age.  And now Davey asks to read it over and over again.

Of course a trip to Hot Springs means a trip to Chick-Fil-A!  Some knitting time for me while Davey plays.  I am getting ready to start the heel flap on the second sock.  Yay!  My other project is also progressing well too!

Davey decided on a yellow beanbag.  Actually he was kind of led to the choice by the saleslady.  He referred to her as the “payer”.  This is anyone who you encounter in a store to whom you give money.  It’s no use explaining at this point that actually she would be the “payee”.  I tried.  🙂  So anyway, he kept changing his mind, and I was in no hurry, so I was just letting him go with it.  The “payer” didn’t have other customers but I can definitely see why she might grow weary, so when he came back to yellow for the 2nd or 3rd time, she said, “OK! Yellow!  Let’s take it outside!”  He was happy with his choice of yellow.  However, he has retired it to his bedroom  for the time being.  It’s a little frustrating for a 2 year old to perch at the top of a beanbag.  We are going to break it in for him.

Happy Library Day!  Oh and tomorrow is Knit in Public Day for me.  I am going downtown to knit with my knitting friends.

I took this picture at Papa Jerry and Pearl’s the other day.   Thought it was so pretty.

Davey had so much fun playing with the flashlight!
