Saturday in Review

It’s about time to get Davey to bed.  He’s had a fun day.  He ended up spending most of the morning playing with the little girls across the street.

I did go to the grocery store, but I did not go to the library or post office.  Oh well, they’ll be there tomorrow and Monday.

I did buy postcards.  I learned about a website called Postcrossing.  You ask for an address and then you mail a postcard to that address.  Once you’ve mailed out a few and they have been received, then you can also receive postcards yourself.  You can start out sending 5 of them.  I thought Davey might really enjoy getting postcards from people from all over the world.

I got postcards ready to go to China, Russia, Germany, England and Texas today  (I guess I checked the box that we’d do domestic cards as well).  The website has been around for about 6 years.  They have rankings and one person has sent over 5,000 postcards!  Davey and I will make a bulletin board or something.  We won’t get too crazy with it.  It should be fun though!

This afternoon, Davey and David (mostly David) drew a Legion Of Doom city and whatever the superhero one is called.  Hall of Justice?

You can kinda see what’s going on here.  They drew dune buggies, and buildings, and cars and boats and airplanes.

Davey enjoyed this.

I wish I would have gotten a close-up of his shirt.  I just got him that shirt.  Why did I buy white?  Not sure what I was thinking except I knew he’d like the lightning bolts.  It now bears evidence of every single thing he touched today.  Peanut butter, grape jelly, strawberries, juice, popsicles, just to name a few.

They finally got hot and went inside.

I stayed outside and did some knitting.

It was hot but not so bad under the shade of the backyard trees (and basketball hoop).

Kokopuff hung out with me although she gets nervous as soon as she senses the camera pointing at her.

And now Davey is in the bath.  Time to read stories and sing songs.

Saturday Morning & High Altitude Popovers

It’s Saturday morning and we are hanging out.  Actually, David went to run, Davey is playing his Hero Up game on the computer, and I am transferring all of our bills to our new bank.  Not my idea of fun, but I am done now.

I am hoping that we do a whole lot of not much today.  Although, I need to go to the grocery store, and the library and the post office.  After that, hopefully not much.

I’ve been researching the making of popovers at high altitude.  They are a fun bread to have with dinner sometimes.  In Arkansas, they rose up in the oven and made beautiful tall popovers.  Here, they resemble a flat muffin with a small hole in the middle.

I’d been using this popover recipe from Allrecipes.  It’s a really good recipe.  Even kinda flat, they tasted pretty good.

But today, I learned this- High Altitude Popovers.  It’s a very detailed explanation of how to make popovers at high altitude, but there is a summary of the recipe at the end which seems straightforward.

If you love popovers or if you’ve never tried them, the allrecipes recipe is very easy and they are fun to make.  If you live at high altitude though, I’ll let you know how this other recipe goes!

Just thought I’d share.

Ok time to go hangout.

Goofy Photo Day

We’ve had these big rumbling rumbling thunderstorms the last few nights.  They’ve been great (except for the flash flooding part in parts of town).  The noise has been amazing.  I love a good thunderstorm.

The other afternoon we went to the playground although a storm was brewing.  We ended up having plenty of time though before it came through.

Davey wanted his goldfish snack right when we got there.  I don’t know what possesses him to put as many goldfish in his mouth as possible.  It may be inherited trait.  He is closely related to someone who does the same thing with popcorn.  I’m not naming any names.

He was bouncing around playing here.  I’m not sure what exactly he was doing, but I liked the shot.

He was telling me yesterday about who is “in his heart”.

“Mommy, you and Daddy are in my heart”.

“Ashley (our 5 year old neighbor) – she faded into my heart.”  (I love the words he chooses).

Then I guess we were getting too gooshy so he got silly with it.  “Mommy!  Trees and bushes are in my heart!”

I haven’t blogged much about knitting lately.  I have been knitting, although not as much as I’d like to.  I am not finishing much though.  I am jumping around from project to project.  I did finish another hat, which I need to mail to a friend.

I’m also working on something that I think is really very cool.  I am test knitting a few projects for an upcoming knitting book that a friend of mine is co-authoring.   This is really neat.  Yarn magically appears at my doorstep, and then I just start knitting it up.  I’ll look forward to sharing pictures of these projects once the book is out!

And a final photo of Davey.  I’ve gone with mostly goofy photos of Davey today, but I like his expression in this one.

Winkie…the baby bunny

There are baby bunnies under our deck.  Every once in awhile they venture out into the backyard.  But then yesterday afternoon we went outside to the front porch to check out the thunderstorm which was brewing.

As we sat down on the front steps, we saw a baby bunny just a few feet from us.  Silly bunnies have very little fear.

As you can see, Davey and I decided to put out a couple of carrots for the bunny (Davey of course immediately named the bunny Winkie).

Apparently, the bunny was not acquainted with carrots.  I tried to tell Davey that he would sniff out them out and recognize them as bunny food, but Winkie seemed to prefer the blades of grass.

Davey told David,  “Daddy, he can mow for us!”

I think Davey might have been trying to convince the bunny to try the carrots here.

We got excited for a moment when the bunny appeared to be moving toward the carrot.

But he just hopped right on past them.

We figure he went home and described the carrots to his mama, and his mama explained to him that he had missed quite a treat.

After the bunny left, I took a few pictures of Davey making silly faces.

Then he demonstrated Superman flying.

Then he decided that he wanted David to come back outside with us, so he went and rang the doorbell.  Many times.

Davey was quite happy when Daddy came to the door.

Soon after that, the rain began coming down in buckets, and we went inside.   Perhaps we will be able to convince the baby bunnies to try the carrots on another day.

Independence Day (and he danced and danced and danced)

On Monday we walked over to our community festival to celebrate the 4th.

Davey immediately got in line to bounce in the bouncy houses.  He’d spent the day discussing how he wanted to ride the donkeys, but as soon as we got there, he forgot about that and went straight for the bouncy houses.

And he had such fun scrambling over this bouncy mountain.

Then despite the fact that he could do this every day of the week, he decided to play on the playground.  I think he enjoyed the jillions of kids there.  It looks like I dressed him to match the playground equipment.

Oh and there were cupcakes!  And like his daddy, he likes the icing best.  He gave David the cake part I think.

But the highlight of the evening  was his dancing.  There was a group playing called Funkiphino.  They were a lot of fun.  We’re going to have to go see them again as it turns out that Davey is a disco/funk loving kid.  He positioned himself at the front of the stage, and then he danced.

and he danced and danced and danced.   He was a blur.   (He also danced with the little girl in the black dress next to him.  He kept trying to strike up a conversation amidst their dancing.)

He even incorporated numerous somersaults into his dance.

It was one of my favorite moments ever – watching him dance.

We than walked back to the park by our house, and we all watched the fireworks. Davey sat by Uncle Michael.

He got a little sleepy.

First Swimming Lessons

Davey started swimming lessons yesterday.

There was abit of anxiety associated with this decision.  Davey had decided that he wanted to “wait until he gets older” (I’d suggested this as a possibility when I saw that he was worried about the lessons).

The main problem was that he did/does not want to put his head in the water.

So I went back and read the class description for the Guppies one more time.  The goals of the class are centered around getting comfortable in the water.  It looks like they will work on blowing bubbles and work up to an assisted backstroke.  It appears that there is likely no possibility of his face having to go into the water at least during this first week.

I explained this to him, and he got excited about going.

I was a little worried that I’d be wrong, so I was a little anxious too.

Fortunately, at least two days into lessons, there has been no suggestion of putting his face in the water.  It’s been all about getting comfortable in the water.

First he got acquainted with his awesome teacher.

Michael, Holly and I watched from the sidelines.  I sweated.  It was so warm and humid in there!  I have no pictures of me sweating thank goodness.

Davey held on tight to the board.

I could see him saying “Go back!  Go back!”  a few times.

He was so happy to return to safety (relative safety that is, I was nervous watching him sit on the edge of the pool).

They had to sit up really straight at one point.  I can’t remember exactly what they were getting ready to do, but I thought it was pretty cute.

At the end, Davey was happy and giving his teacher high fives.  High fives with Vigor!  It looked like he was trying to knock his poor teacher back into the water!

David took him back today and there was more getting comfortable in the water.  No sign of “face in the water” yet.  By the time it comes, hopefully Davey will be more ready!  We are proud of him!

Leadville

I have not posted in several days, and it has resulted in a build-up of stories about which I want to blog!

I’ll go back to Saturday and our trip to Leadville.  My brother and his wife ran the Leadville 1/2 marathon.  At least we all thought it was a 1/2 until the night before, when they learned it was a “Heavy” half and so a bit over 15 miles long.  They started at 10,000 feet and ran up Mosquito Pass to 13,000 feet!  They did great – that altitude was crazy though.

David, Davey and I went to cheer them on.  We missed them at the 4 mile rest stop, but it was also the 11 mile rest stop when they came back, so we hung out there and waited for them.

We had to entertain Davey as it took them abit of time to climb that almost 3,000 feet and then come back down.

Here’s what they climbed.  Switchbacks to the tippy top.

So to pass some time, Davey and I decided to create a sculpture/bridge/castle.

We created quite a masterpiece.  Dandelions, rocks, and wood were our media.

Davey found a Christmas Tree Rock to add to our piece.

It was dusty and dry up there, and we all got pretty dusty ourselves.

After awhile, here came Michael and Holly!

After they passed through, we returned to Leadville to meet them at the finish line.

I’m going to blame this photo (and the other 4 David took) on the effects of high altitude.

I look thrilled don’t I?

So we waited in town, and when they approached the finish,  Davey was ready to greet them with high 5s !

They finished strong.  Pretty cool.

Rock Star Davey

Today Davey agreed to participate in a photo shoot.  This was to help out one of David’s students.

Davey was first photographed posing with his arms up.  Abit like Superman.

Then they began transforming him into Rock Star Davey.

Black Hoodie:

A little gel in the hair:

Gotta wear shades:

Strap on the guitar (There’s probably a much cooler way to say this – something maybe involving the word ax, but I better not push it).

He was ready to go.

He was ready to rock.

He had a good ole time.   He received the perfect compensation for a 3 year old.  M&Ms and a Thor action figure.

I was having a great time too as I’d never taken pictures in a room with the lights and everything all set up.  It was great fun.

Davey is having a good day all around.  His Uncle Michael and Aunt Holly got here last night, and Davey loves having them here.  He told Holly a little while ago, “This sure is a good day!”

It is!

Berry Patch Farm

Saturday we made our first trip to Berry Patch farms.

What a fun farm. There were some chickens, cats, and dogs running around and also this fine specimen of a turkey.  He was incredible.

Davey was striding along – ready to pick strawberries!

The strawberries were small and just perfect for little Davey eatin’.

and he ate, and he ate and he ate

It is an organic farm so he only ran the risk of a little dirt.  We heard parents all around us saying, “stop eating those!  Don’t eat so many strawberries!”  They were pretty irresistible though.

He paused briefly for a picture with me.

but only briefly.

We did pretty well and had somehow managed to pick them faster then he could eat them.

I have a feeling we will be back there a couple more times at the end of July and in August when they get their next round of strawberries.  And raspberries!

Tumbling Attire and a shawlette

Today Davey was Spiderman.  Or actually more specifically it went like this:

I said to Davey, “good job Davey!” (I can’t remember what we were doing at the moment.  I think it had to do with making it to the potty in time.)

Davey looked at me and said, “It’s Peter Parker, Mommy.”

He wanted to wear his Spiderman costume to tumbling.

I guess here he was explaining why.

Notice how short the costume is.  He wore this last Halloween.  I guess he’s grown a few inches since then.

Spidey in the shadows – with a grin. I am thinking the costume is so small that his arm mobility must have been limited.

He did wear this to tumblin’, but he agreed to take it off once he got there.  I think he would burst out of the seams running around in it too much  (He’d like that actually – it’d be very Hulk-like).

And I finished a project today.  It’s blocking.  I like taking blocking pictures.  I kind of amuse myself with them.  Everyone else might be more annoyed by the varying heights of the pins.

I’ve knitted this pattern before not too long ago.  It’s the Age of Brass and Steam Kerchief.  It’s a great project to carry along with me where ever I go.  I can pick it up easily and knit a row or 1/2.

It’s nice to finish something up!
